Some iPhone Duo screens are cracking at the fold. Here is what to do in the first 14 days

Some iPhone Duo owners say the inner screen of their new phone cracked along the fold within hours or days of opening the box. If you are dealing with an iPhone Duo screen crack, or want to be ready for one, the first 14 days matter most, because that is how long Apple gives you to return a phone bought from Apple.

The short version

Owners started posting photos of cracked inner screens soon after the iPhone Duo went on sale on Oct. 23, and Apple has not said what is causing it. Here is what it costs and what to do.

  1. Apple lists $999 to fix a damaged inner display without AppleCare, which is just under half of the phone’s $1,999 starting price.
  2. With AppleCare, Apple lists a $99 fee for inner display damage, and its AppleCare terms say there are no service fees for mechanical failures.
  3. Apple gives you 14 calendar days from the day you received a phone bought from Apple to return it, so a phone that arrived on Oct. 23 can go back through Nov. 6.
  4. A repair company’s teardown on Oct. 25 found dust can reach the hinge and named possible causes, but it said none of them is confirmed.
  5. Apple inspects each phone and decides whether a crack is a defect or accidental damage, so take photos of both screens before you go in.

What changes for you: a crack you did not cause should count as a manufacturing problem, which Apple’s one-year warranty covers. A crack Apple decides came from a drop or pressure counts as accidental damage, which the warranty does not cover. On a $1,999 phone, that one call is the difference between paying nothing and paying $999.

What owners are reporting

Apple put the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, on sale in stores on Friday, Oct. 23. By the weekend, owners had posted photos online of inner screens with a crack or a bright line running along the fold. Some said it happened during setup. Others said it appeared after about a day of normal use.

Nobody outside Apple knows how many phones are affected. Apple had not commented on the reports when this article was written on Monday morning, Oct. 26. Some images being shared are old, edited or jokes, so a viral photo is not proof on its own.

What the teardown found

The repair company iFixit took an iPhone Duo apart and published its findings on Oct. 25. It gave the phone a provisional repair score of 5 out of 10. In a dust test, powder reached the hinge’s moving parts and, in iFixit’s words, “the hinge started crunching.” Cleaning those parts means removing the folding screen.

iFixit also noted that the reported breaks sit in one spot. “The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support,” it wrote. It offered a few possible causes, including a support bar under the screen that may not drop far enough when the phone closes. It was clear that these are ideas to test, not a confirmed answer.

Apple’s own support page for hinge problems, published on launch day, lists a bent or broken hinge and odd noises when opening or closing as symptoms. It says, “There aren’t diagnostics or software remedies for hinge issues,” and that the fix is to replace the inner display assembly. You can read it on Apple’s iPhone Duo hinge troubleshooting page.

What an iPhone Duo screen crack costs to fix

These are Apple’s own prices in the US, checked on Oct. 26, 2026. Apple says it inspects every phone to set the final fee.

RepairWithout AppleCareWith AppleCare
Inner display damage$999$99
Cover layer only$49$19
Other damage$1,499$99

Our math: without coverage, one accidental inner screen crack costs $999, or just under half of the $1,999 phone. With AppleCare, the same repair costs $900 less. If Apple treats a crack as a defect, the warranty should cover it at no charge. Apple’s repair estimates are on its iPhone service and repair page. We broke down every other Duo repair price in our iPhone Duo repair cost guide.

What to do if your inner screen cracks

  1. Stop folding it. If you see a line or hear a crunch, leave the phone open or closed and stop working the hinge, so you do not put more stress on the damaged spot.
  2. Take photos right away. Shoot both screens and the hinge in good light, with the date showing on another device if you can. Photos of a phone with no dents or scuffs help show it was not dropped.
  3. Find your receipt and check the date. If you bought from Apple, you have 14 calendar days from the day the phone arrived to start a return.
  4. Contact Apple before the return window closes. Use the Apple Support app or book a Genius Bar visit, and ask for the phone to be checked as a possible defect, not accidental damage.
  5. If you bought from a carrier or another store, its own return rules apply, not Apple’s. Call it at the same time you contact Apple.

Should you add AppleCare now?

If you did not buy AppleCare with the phone, Apple lets you add a plan in the Settings app for 60 days after you buy a new Apple product. For a Duo bought on Oct. 23, that runs to about Dec. 22.

The case for it is simple. One accidental inner screen repair costs $999 without coverage and $99 with it. If you are not sure the hinge will hold up, AppleCare turns a possible $999 bill into a $99 one. If you already have an AppleCare One plan on your account, check that the Duo has been added to it.

Should you still buy an iPhone Duo?

If you have not bought one yet, waiting a few weeks costs you very little. Apple has not said whether this is a small batch problem or something bigger. If you were already on the fence, our look at whether a foldable iPhone is worth it lays out who gets the most from the big screen.

If you love yours and it is working, there is no reason to panic. Keep it clean, avoid pressing on the fold and keep your receipt handy until the 14 days are up. Apple’s hinge guide also asks owners to remove third-party cases and screen protectors before checking a hinge problem.

What we don’t know yet

  • How many iPhone Duo phones are affected.
  • Whether Apple will treat these cracks as a defect across the board.
  • Whether a software update, a repair program or a hardware change is coming.

Watch for an Apple statement or a new support note this week. We will update this article when Apple says anything on the record. In the meantime, here is which apps already use the Duo’s big screen.
