Apple opened iPhone Duo preorders this morning, Friday, Oct. 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific (8 a.m. Eastern). Before you tap Buy, look at the iPhone Duo repair cost Apple now lists on its own support site: fixing a damaged inner screen without AppleCare+ costs $999. That is half the price of a $1,999 phone.
The short version
Apple has published its out-of-warranty repair fees for the iPhone Duo, and the folding screen is the expensive part. Here is what each repair costs and when AppleCare+ pays for itself.
- A damaged inner screen costs $999 to fix without AppleCare+, and $99 with it.
- Damage Apple puts under “other damage” costs $1,499 without AppleCare+, which is 75% of the $1,999 starting price.
- Apple’s store lists AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the iPhone Duo at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. Two years paid monthly plus one inner screen repair comes to $578.76, which is $420.24 less than the $999 repair alone.
- Paying yearly is cheaper: two years at $199.99 a year comes to $399.98, or $79.78 less than paying monthly.
- Preorders opened Oct. 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, and the phone goes on sale Oct. 23 in more than 70 countries and regions.
What Apple charges to fix an iPhone Duo
These are the estimates on Apple’s iPhone repair page when you pick iPhone Duo, checked Oct. 16, 2026. Apple says the final fee is set after it inspects the phone, tax may apply, and a shipping fee may be added for mail-in repairs. Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own prices.
| Repair | Without AppleCare+ | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Cover layer damage | $49 | $19 |
| Back glass damage | $199 | $29 |
| Battery service | $229 | $0 (when capacity is below 80%) |
| Rear camera damage | $229 | Not listed |
| Outer display damage | $379 | $29 |
| Outer display and back glass damage | $509 | Not listed |
| Inner display damage | $999 | $99 |
| Other damage | $1,499 | $99 (other accidental damage) |
| Theft or loss | Not covered | $149 (plans that include theft and loss) |
The upshot: on most phones, the screen is the big repair. On the iPhone Duo, Apple lists two screens, a separate cover layer, and an “other damage” fee that costs more than many whole phones. A drop that dents the frame or hurts the hinge area can land in that $1,499 bucket.
The cover layer is worth a second look. Apple lists it as its own repair, separate from the inner display, at $49 without AppleCare+. Apple’s AppleCare terms also say a separate service fee applies to replacing the cover layer on iPhone Duo.
Is AppleCare+ worth it for the iPhone Duo? Here is the math
On Apple’s online store, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the iPhone Duo costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, checked Oct. 16, 2026. Here is the monthly math first.
- Two years of AppleCare+ at $19.99 a month: $479.76.
- Add one inner screen repair at $99: $578.76.
- The same inner screen repair without AppleCare+: $999.
- Difference: $420.24 in favor of AppleCare+, after just one inner screen accident.
In plain terms: if you keep the phone two years, pay yearly. Two years at $199.99 a year is $399.98, and $498.98 with one inner screen repair. That is $500.02 less than the unprotected $999 repair.
Now the other side. If you never break anything, $479.76 is money you did not need to spend. Cracking the outer screen and the back glass once each costs $578 without AppleCare+ and $58 with it, which is close to the two-year plan cost on its own. So AppleCare+ makes the most sense if the folding screen is the reason you are buying the phone, if you have cracked a phone before, or if the phone will live in a bag with keys.
If you already pay for AppleCare One, check whether it can cover the iPhone Duo before you add a separate plan. Apple says AppleCare+ and AppleCare One availability varies by region. On Apple’s store, AppleCare One Individual costs the same $19.99 a month and covers up to three products, including the iPhone Duo, so it can work out cheaper if you also want to cover an iPad or Apple Watch.

What we do not know yet
Apple’s fees tell you the price of a repair, not how often you will need one. Nobody has long-term numbers yet on how the iPhone Duo’s hinge and inner screen hold up after a year in pockets and bags. We will update this story when there is real-world data.
