$1,999 buys the cheapest iPhone Duo. $3,199 buys the most expensive one. Neither number tells you what the phone will actually cost you, because as of today Apple has published no out-of-warranty repair price for the folding screen or the hinge, and the Duo does not yet appear in Apple’s own list of iPhones eligible for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. Whether the foldable iPhone is worth it turns on a set of numbers Apple gave you and one set it did not.
Here is the whole picture, and the honest answer at the end.
The price at every tier, and the one figure that never moves
Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, was announced on September 9. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16. It ships Friday, October 23. Two colors, star white and night sky.

Look at the right-hand column. The gap is $700 at every single tier.
That matters more than the headline price, because it separates two decisions people tend to blur into one. Storage is a question about how you shoot and what you keep on the device. The $700 is a single flat charge for the folding screen and the body around it. It is the only number you need to argue with.
The jump from 256GB to 2TB adds $1,200, which is more than a whole iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199. Apple’s steps are $200, then $400, then $600. The first step is the only one most people will feel good about a year later.
What the extra $700 buys
The 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display gives you about 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area, and both screens use the same aspect ratio so nothing jumps when you open it. Both run ProMotion at up to 120Hz with Always On and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Then there is the thing the fold actually unlocks. iOS 27 brings Split View to iPhone for the first time, meaning two apps side by side, or two windows of the same app. You can save app pairs and come back to them. Netflix, Zoom and Slack shipped folding layouts on day one.
The body is grade 5 titanium with a 3D-printed hinge cover. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back, IP68 rated to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Apple says the hinge uses more than 100 components and the inner display sits between high-strength glass layers with adhesives that let the layers slide past each other like the pages of a book, which is how it relieves bend stress.
The chip is the A20 Pro, the same one in the iPhone 18 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process and sitting on a vapor chamber. Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.
If you spend your day in two apps at once, that list is a real argument. If you do not, most of it is a description of a nicer object.
What $1,999 does not buy
This is the part the launch coverage moves past quickly.
No dedicated telephoto lens. Apple lists two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The 2x zoom comes from the main camera itself, which Apple describes as being like two cameras in one, rather than from a third lens. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, at $700 less, has a third 48MP camera with 4x telephoto. Anyone buying a $1,999 phone as a camera upgrade is buying the wrong $1,999 phone.
No Face ID. Authentication runs through Touch ID in the side button. It works open or closed and supports Apple Watch unlock. Dropping Face ID freed the space for the FaceTime camera hidden under the inner screen. Whether that is a downgrade depends entirely on how you unlock a phone, and the honest answer is that plenty of people will not notice.
Weight and thickness. 254 grams, against 249 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed it is 11.3mm thick, against 8.75mm. Open it is 5.2mm. It is the heaviest iPhone Apple has made and it is a chunkier object in a pocket than any iPhone before it.
Shorter typical battery life. Apple rates the Duo at up to 24 hours of typical use with equal time on each display, or 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 hours on the outer. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated at 30 hours typical use. Fast charging reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes, but the 60W adapter that gets you there is sold separately.
Apple Pencil support is not here yet. Apple says it arrives later this year on both displays. No date.
eSIM only, everywhere. There is no SIM tray on any Duo in any country. That space went to the battery.
What Apple published about repairs, and the gap it left
Here is the part that should shape the decision more than the sticker price does.
Start with what is confirmed. Apple’s coverage pages list AppleCare One at $19.99 a month for up to three products, with extra products at $5.99 a month each, and AppleCare One Family at $49.99 a month covering every eligible device for up to six people, available from September 14. For an iPhone on either plan, Apple publishes flat service fees: $29 to repair a damaged screen or back glass, $99 for other accidental damage such as liquid, $149 as the theft and loss deductible, and no fee for a battery below 80 percent capacity. You have 60 days after buying a device to add a plan.
Now the gap.
Apple’s AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss pricing table lists iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone 16, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. As of September 10, the iPhone Duo is not on it. Apple’s press release confirms AppleCare+ and AppleCare One are available for the Duo. The per-device figure is not published anywhere yet.
There is a second gap, and it is the sharper one. Apple’s own AppleCare footnote defines the terms it uses in the small print: the Ceramic Shield display is what the terms call “Screen,” and the Ceramic Shield back is what they call “Back glass.” Those are the two parts covered by the $29 fee. The iPhone Duo’s inner folding panel is not Ceramic Shield. Apple describes it as a nano-textured polymer cover layer over high-strength glass, which is a different part with a different name. Whether a cracked inner display is a $29 screen repair or something else entirely is not stated on any page Apple currently serves.
Add two more absences. Apple has not published a hinge cycle rating, the number of folds the mechanism is designed to survive. It has not published a crease measurement either, though the matte nano-texture finish is clearly meant to make the fold line harder to see, and early hands-on reports say you can still catch it at some angles.
So the single most expensive part of the phone, the one part with no precedent in any previous iPhone, currently has no published durability rating and no clearly stated repair fee.
That is not a reason to panic. A folding panel is a genuinely new part and Apple has no price history to anchor to. It is a reason to treat the first-generation hinge as an open risk rather than a solved problem, and to price coverage into the decision rather than around it.
Three years of AppleCare One at $19.99 comes to $719.64. On a 256GB Duo with the $79 case, that is roughly $2,798 before tax, if you put the whole plan against the phone. Split across the three products the plan actually allows, the share drops. Either way, $1,999 is where the bill starts, not where it ends.
Why $57.99 a month is not the bargain it looks like
Apple gives two monthly routes and they are not the same product.
Apple Card Monthly Installments splits the purchase into $83.29 a month for 24 months on the 256GB model. That totals $1,998.96, which is the price. You own the phone.
Apple Upgrade is a lease, run by Klarna, starting as low as $57.99 a month over 24 months. Read Apple’s own footnote before that number does its work on you. It is a consumer lease, not a purchase or a loan. Closing the lease means returning the device. Ending it early can trigger what Apple calls a substantial charge. Typical 24-month payments run from $57.99 to $92.81 depending on the model.
One more line from that footnote is worth reading twice: the advertised payment may not include the estimated value of a trade-in device. The number on the marketing page is not the number after your old phone comes off it, in either direction.
The lease is a fine product for someone who upgrades every two years and knows they are renting. It is a bad product for someone who read $57.99 and heard $1,999 made cheap.
Trade-in is the one lever that moves the real figure, and it is worth pricing your current phone through Apple Trade In before you decide anything, because the credit depends on your exact model and condition.
Where $1,999 sits among the foldables already on sale
The Duo is not the most expensive foldable you can buy. Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 on July 22 at $1,899 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at $2,099, with the Z Flip 8 at $1,199. Apple’s price landed between the two Folds.
The gap that has actually changed is inside Apple’s own lineup. On the same day, Apple raised prices on the older iPhones still being sold. The iPhone 17 moved to $899, the iPhone Air to $1,099, and the iPhone 17e to $699, each about $100 higher than before. Apple has pointed to memory chip costs as the reason across the industry.
Everything moving up at once narrows the perceived distance to the fold. That is worth naming plainly, because a smaller gap is not the same thing as a smaller check.
Four things US buyers should sort out before October 16
Your carrier choice happens at checkout, not after. If you use Apple Card Monthly Installments to get the $83.29 figure, Apple requires you to pick AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon during checkout. The phone still ships unlocked, so you can switch later, but you cannot skip the step.
Confirm your line is ready to move to eSIM. There is no SIM tray on any Duo. Apple says eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers including all three of the above, so for most people this is a transfer rather than a problem. Sort it before the phone arrives rather than on launch morning.
iPhone Handoff starts narrow. The new feature that lets you move one number between two iPhones is available at launch with T-Mobile in the US. If you were planning to keep an old iPhone running alongside the Duo on the same number, check whether your carrier is in.
Budget for tax and the charger. The $1,999 is before sales tax, which varies by state and gets added at checkout. And Apple’s 50 percent in 20 minutes figure depends on a 60W-capable adapter that is sold separately.
One more thing worth knowing if you are holding an older iPhone: Apple is extending free satellite features for another year for iPhone 14, 15 and 16 owners who activated in a supported country before midnight Pacific on September 9. That is a small reason less to feel rushed.
Buying it where Apple is not selling it
Apple named 18 markets as examples of a first wave covering more than 70 countries and regions on October 23, with 28 more on October 30. It has not published either full list, so plenty of readers will be buying through importers rather than from Apple.
Two questions matter more than the price you are quoted.
What warranty are you actually getting? A unit bought through an importer usually carries the seller’s cover rather than Apple’s. On a phone whose folding panel has no clearly stated repair fee, that is the whole risk in one question.
Is your line eSIM ready? The Duo has no SIM tray in any market. In Nigeria, MTN, Airtel, 9mobile and Glo all support eSIM, with Glo the last to launch it in March 2025, and activation currently means a store visit with valid ID and your NIN to collect a QR code. Solved, but not a setting you can flip on the sofa.
Ignore any price quoted before stock actually lands. Wait for real listings, then measure them against Apple’s own $1,999 plus duty and shipping.
The verdict
Buy it if the 7.6-inch screen changes what you do all day. That means real Split View work, reading, sketching once the Pencil arrives, or video on a screen half again the size of a Pro Max. For that person the $700 is buying a different device, not a nicer version of the same one.
Do not buy it as a camera. You would be paying $700 more for one fewer rear camera.
Do not buy it because $57.99 a month sounded manageable.
And if you are the kind of buyer who keeps a phone for four or five years, wait for the second generation. Not because this one looks fragile, but because the two things you most need to know about a first-generation hinge, how many folds it is rated for and what it costs to fix, are the two things nobody can tell you yet.
Pre-orders open October 16. Between now and then, check whether Apple has posted a repair price for the inner display. If it has, that number tells you more about the real cost of this phone than the $1,999 on the front of every article about it.
