Google tries out another social networking app – Shoelace

Google has had failed attempts at social networking apps but is now diving into another one called ‘Shoelace‘.

Shoelace – which is coming months after Google+ was shut down – is “a mobile app that helps connect people with shared interests through in-person activities.” It’s an app that helps people “who have recently moved cities or who are looking to meet others who live nearby” to meet up in real life.

How does Shoelace work?

When you sign up on the platform, the app helps you connect with others through shared interests and hobbies. Shoelace will notify you of events and activities that you might be interested in, based on those interests. You can create listings for activities or events and invite friends and strangers to join you, whether they use Shoelace or not.

According to Google, the idea behind the name Shoelace is to tie people together based on their interests – like two laces on a shoe. Activities are then called ‘Loops’.

For now, the social app is only available in New York City and their goal is to bring Shoelace to cities all over the United States before anywhere else.

Google has tried their hands on different social networking apps such as Google Buzz, Google Friend, Google+, but they didn’t seem to make much of a mark; it’ll be interesting to see if Google does things differently with Shoelace.
