Twitter is increasing its 140 character limit to 10,000

According to reports, Twitter may soon be increasing its 140-character limit to 10,000 words. This will mean that both tweets and direct messaging on the social media platform can now be as long as 10,000 words.

The new plan is currently being developed by a team called ‘Beyond 140” and is likely to be released by March 2016. With this change, tweets longer than 140 words will show only the first 140 words on the timeline but will give users the option to click to see the full tweet.

In addition, when a user writes beyond the 140-character limit, Twitter will prompt them that they have crossed that threshold in order to encourage the brevity that the platform is known for.

Many devoted Twitter users have shown great displeasure about this change with most arguing that this would ruin the speed and brevity that made Twitter unique. In response to some of these comments, Twitter’s CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey tweeted a screenshot of text explaining the reasons for the expansion;

Looking at both sides of the argument, I think it’s still too early to tell how this change will affect the way users use Twitter. After all for those truly interested in keeping tweets short and simple they’ll have the prompter telling them whenever they have passed the 140-character mark and for those who’ve been tweeting screen shots of longer texts, they can now just tweet the entire text directly. So if you ask me, everybody wins.

Update: Yes!! Twitter plans to expand its 140 character limit but not certain it will be up to 10,000
