Nigeria adopts 3 word addresses for postal services

Nigeria has adopted what3words for mail deliveries, becoming the third African country to do so. The system is already being used in Mongolia, Sint Maarten, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Tonga and Solomon Islands.

In a statement, what3words said NIPOST is working to modernise and streamline its operations, and has set itself the ambitious target of increasing home delivery to 70% within the next 2 years and 90% by 2020 through the Mail for Every House Initiative (MEHI). The adoption of 3 word addresses for deliveries across the country will help to achieve this goal.

“We are very pleased to be collaborating with what3words as an addressing solution with huge potential to unlock opportunities” said Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi, Nigeria’s Postmaster General. “Better addressing is a key to NIPOST’s agenda, which aims to transform, innovate, and deliver more services to more people all over the country”.

“With a rapidly growing e-commerce ecosystem, Nigeria is a very exciting country to be working with,” said Chris Sheldrick, CEO and Co-founder of what3words. “Postal services have a critical role in building a strong economy and NIPOST are firmly focused on the future, and are taking steps to modernise and grow their capacity and range of services.”

  1. I ask myself, what was wrong with the old postcode system that NIPOST implemented a few years ago?

I do not think adopting a fancy addressing system is the panacea to the myriads of yawa plaguing NIPOST. In my opinion, investing billions of taxpayer’s Naira in an expensive and fancy infrastructure albeit with very impressive credentials like the What3words will NOT automatically translate to operational excellence for NIPOST. The truth of the matter is NIPOST has been swimming in the quagmire of ignorance for so long that they get easily impressed with any innovation that offers just marginal value proposition.

The biggest challenge facing NIPOST is how to encourage Nigerians to adopt and use the What3words 3-word address coordinates? If my grandmother in faraway “Kori Isa” village in Obafemi-Owode LGA in Ogun State decided to send me a mail, how can she know my triple word play to use in the mailing address which would greatly improve NIPOST mail delivery capability?

Unfortunately, NIPOST does not have any credible history of implementing a complex public awareness and brand marketing campaigns to draw support for their operations. NIPOST is attempting to empty the Atlantic ocean with a tea spoon!!!
