Lagos State Government denounces 5% levy on physical and digital platforms, suspends LSFVCB Secretary

Lagos State Government has denounced a 5% levy on Audio and Visual Contents of Physical and Digital platforms.

As shared via a thread of tweets by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media, Mr. Gawat Jubril, The Executive Secretary, Mr. Bamidele Balogun who had earlier issued the notice to relevant stakeholders was unauthorised to do so. Hence his suspension, pending an administrative inquiry.

One may recall that the news on the purported implementation was revealed to the public when the Managing Director of IROKO TV, posted the letter to sent to him by the Board.

Thereby raising concerns about the insensitive nature by the State Government towards business recovery, and breeding a case for the government’s high-handedness during a pandemic, amidst a “perceived range of unjustifiable fees” levied on citizens in recent events.

Opportunely addressing this, the SSA to the State Governor has explained the administration’s awareness to the plight of citizens and sectors of the economy, and in a closing tweet, advises all stakeholders to disregard the said publication.

In what will appear as stakeholders having the upper hand on this [pending an administrative inquiry], Jason Njoku of IROKO TV has appreciated the collective efforts of everyone who raised concerns over the levy.

P.S. :-

It is important to note that a senior editor at TechCity attempted reaching out to the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB) upon reading on the implementation notice in order to obtain a balanced report regarding the matter at hand.
