Apple has finally entered the foldable phone market.
After years of rumours and speculation, the company unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, making it Apple’s first foldable iPhone. And it immediately created one very obvious question:
Why does it cost $1,999?
That’s more than twice the starting price of some conventional flagship smartphones and significantly more than Apple’s standard iPhone models.
The price isn’t entirely surprising. Foldable phones have always carried a premium because they combine two displays, a specialised hinge, complex internal components, and a design that is considerably harder to manufacture.
But a high price doesn’t automatically make a product worth buying.
So, is the foldable iPhone worth it?
The answer depends heavily on what you want from your phone.
How Much Does the Foldable iPhone Cost?
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US for the 256GB model.
Apple has not positioned it as an affordable alternative to the regular iPhone. It sits firmly at the top of the company’s smartphone range.
For context, Apple’s newly announced iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. That means the entry-level Duo costs $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro and $700 more than the Pro Max.
That is a substantial premium.
And it raises the most important question: What are you actually getting for that extra money?
The Main Attraction Is the Display
The biggest reason to buy the iPhone Duo is obvious once you open it.
The phone has a 7.6-inch internal display, giving you a screen closer in size to a small tablet while still allowing the device to fold into a pocket-sized form.
When closed, it uses a 5.4-inch external display.
Apple says the external screen provides about 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro while keeping the device compact.
This changes what you can do with the phone.
Instead of constantly switching between apps, you have more room for multitasking when the device is open.
You could have a video call alongside other content, work with multiple apps, read documents more comfortably, or simply enjoy a much larger display without carrying a separate tablet.
That is the strongest argument for the Duo.
It Is Not Just an iPhone That Folds in Half
Apple has redesigned parts of iOS to take advantage of the larger display.
The company is positioning the Duo as a productivity and entertainment device rather than simply a conventional iPhone with a folding screen.
The larger display gives apps more room to work with, making activities such as:
- Multitasking
- Video streaming
- Gaming
- Reading
- Photo editing
- Web browsing
- Document work
more comfortable.
That said, whether this makes a meaningful difference depends on how you use your phone.
If you mostly use WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, banking apps and YouTube, you may not benefit enough to justify spending nearly $2,000.
Apple Has Put Serious Hardware Inside
The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the same generation of Pro silicon powering the new iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Apple has also developed a custom thermal management system with a vapor chamber to help manage heat.
The phone uses a dual-battery architecture designed around the foldable form factor and is advertised as offering all-day battery life.
So this isn’t a compromise-heavy foldable designed simply to show off the form factor.
It’s a high-end iPhone with high-end hardware.
The Camera Setup Is Different From the Pro Models
The Duo isn’t simply an iPhone 18 Pro Max that happens to fold.
It has a dual 48MP rear-camera system, along with a redesigned front camera arrangement.
That means Apple’s most expensive iPhone isn’t necessarily the obvious choice for someone who cares primarily about having the company’s most advanced traditional camera system.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max introduce a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, which Apple describes as its most advanced iPhone camera system yet.
So if photography is your number-one priority, the Duo deserves a closer comparison before you spend the extra money.
What About the Fold?
This is one of the areas where Apple is clearly trying to differentiate itself.
The internal display uses a special nano-texture finish designed to minimise glare, while Apple has also developed a precision hinge for the folding mechanism.
The company says the Duo is designed for durability, with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance reported for the device.
Apple has also focused heavily on making the foldable experience feel refined rather than experimental.
That’s important because early generations of foldable phones from across the industry have faced concerns around durability, thickness and visible display creases.
Whether Apple’s approach holds up over several years is something consumers will only know after extensive real-world use.
The Biggest Problem Is Still the Price
Let’s be honest.
$1,999 is a lot of money for a smartphone.
And the premium becomes harder to justify when you compare it with Apple’s own lineup.

The 7.6-inch display gives you significantly more space without requiring you to carry a separate device.
Multitask constantly
If you’re regularly moving between documents, communication apps, video calls and other tasks, the larger display can be genuinely useful.
Want the newest Apple hardware
For some buyers, being first to Apple’s new product category is part of the appeal.
Plan to keep the phone for several years
The upfront cost is easier to justify if you intend to use the device for a long time rather than upgrade every year.
Who Should Skip It?
Don’t buy it if:
You mainly want the best iPhone camera
The iPhone 18 Pro models have Apple’s more advanced Pro camera system.
You don’t need a large screen
If your current iPhone already does everything you need, the Duo won’t suddenly transform your everyday smartphone experience.
You’re buying primarily for social media
Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and similar apps don’t necessarily justify a $1,999 phone.
You care about value
The iPhone 18 Pro gives you flagship performance for $800 less.
You’re concerned about first-generation hardware
Even with Apple’s engineering experience, this is a completely new product category for the company.
What About the Competition?
Apple is entering a market that Samsung has been developing since 2019.
Samsung’s latest foldable lineup includes the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi also have high-end foldables.
Samsung’s experience gives it an advantage in understanding what consumers actually want from foldable hardware.
Apple, however, has something Samsung doesn’t: the ability to combine the hardware with the tightly integrated iOS ecosystem and its enormous existing iPhone user base.
Industry analysts expect Apple’s entry to significantly expand interest in foldables. Reuters reports that analysts estimate Apple could capture around a quarter of the global foldable market, despite entering years after Samsung.
When Can You Buy It?
The iPhone Duo is scheduled to become available in October.
Apple has announced October 16 for preorders and October 23 for general availability, according to reporting on the launch.
For Nigerian buyers, the eventual local price will be considerably higher than a straight naira conversion of $1,999 because of exchange rates, taxes, import costs, retailer margins and availability.
That makes the value question even more important locally.
So, Is the Foldable iPhone Worth It?
For most people, no.
At $1,999, the iPhone Duo isn’t designed to be the sensible iPhone purchase. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max offer excellent performance and Apple’s newest conventional smartphone technology for considerably less.
But that doesn’t mean the Duo is a bad product.
It’s arguably the most interesting iPhone Apple has released in years because it changes what an iPhone can physically be.
If you genuinely want a phone that can transform into a larger screen for work, entertainment and multitasking, the Duo offers something the regular iPhone cannot.
That’s what you’re paying for.
