YouTube has introduced a new feature that will pause ads during livestreams when viewer engagement is at its peak. The update aims to improve the live viewing experience and help creators maintain momentum.
Ads Will Pause When Chat Is Active
According to YouTube, its system can now detect when live chat activity spikes. When this happens, ads will be temporarily held back for all viewers.
The platform says this move is designed to protect the energy of live moments and keep audiences engaged without interruptions.
Supporters Get Instant Ad-Free Viewing
YouTube is also rewarding fans who support creators during livestreams.
When viewers send Super Chats, Super Stickers, or gifts, they will receive a short ad-free window immediately after their purchase.
For context:
- Super Chat lets users pay to highlight messages
- Super Stickers are paid images that stand out in chat
This means supporters get a smoother, uninterrupted experience right after engaging.
More Updates for Live Creators
Alongside this change, YouTube shared several updates:
- More creators can now receive gifts in countries like Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand
- Viewers can now send GIFs in horizontal livestreams, not just vertical ones
- Creators can stream in both vertical and horizontal formats at the same time
- All viewers can interact in one shared chat, regardless of screen format
YouTube says these updates reflect changing viewing habits. In 2025, over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. came from connected TVs.
Comes After YouTube Premium Price Increase
This update comes shortly after YouTube increased its Premium subscription prices in the U.S.
- Individual plan: $13.99 → $15.99 per month
- Family plan: $22.99 → $26.99 per month
Previously, paying for YouTube Premium was the main way to enjoy an ad-free experience. Now, livestream viewers may get that benefit without subscribing—at least in certain moments.
