The new Xbox cloud gaming price is by the hour. Here’s which pack to buy

The new Xbox cloud gaming price works out to between 24 and 40 cents an hour. Xbox is selling streaming time in packs: $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 hours or $11.99 for 50 hours. Xbox Insiders can buy them now, and Xbox says the option rolls out more broadly in November.

The short version

Xbox cloud gaming is moving to hours you pay for. Game Pass will include a monthly allowance, and packs cover anything past it, or let you stream without Game Pass at all.

  1. The packs cost $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 hours and $11.99 for 50 hours, which Xbox calls introductory prices.
  2. Per hour, that is about 40 cents, 32 cents and 24 cents.
  3. The 50-hour pack costs one cent more than the 25-hour and 10-hour packs bought together, and gives you 15 more hours.
  4. From November, Game Pass Ultimate includes 15 cloud hours a month, Premium 10 and Essential 5.
  5. Xbox has not announced the exact November date, the list of eligible games or which markets are covered.

The upshot: Game Pass is about to stop being all-you-can-stream. Xbox says the new limits will affect about 4% of Game Pass subscribers. If you stream most evenings, you are probably in that 4%, and these packs are how you keep playing.

We divided each price by its hours. Xbox lists these as introductory prices, so they could change later.

PackPriceCost per hour
10 hours$3.99about 40 cents
25 hours$7.99about 32 cents
50 hours$11.99about 24 cents

Xbox says purchased playtime stays on your account until you use it. That matters, because it means a bigger pack never goes to waste just because a busy month got in the way.

The one-cent surprise in the middle pack

Buy the 25-hour pack and the 10-hour pack together and you pay $11.98 for 35 hours. The 50-hour pack costs $11.99. That is 15 extra hours for one extra cent.

So unless you are sure you will only ever stream a few hours, skip the small packs. If you think you will use 35 hours at some point, the 50-hour pack is the one to buy.

How many cloud hours does Game Pass include from November?

Xbox announced the limits in its September post on cloud gaming changes:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours a month
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours a month
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours a month

Here is what that means for someone who streams about an hour a day, or roughly 30 hours a month:

  • On Ultimate, your 15 included hours cover half the month. The 25-hour pack ($7.99) covers the rest and leaves 10 hours for next month.
  • On Premium, you are 20 hours short. The 25-hour pack ($7.99) covers it with 5 hours to spare.
  • On Essential, you are 25 hours short. The 25-hour pack ($7.99) covers it exactly.

On every plan, a daily player ends up buying extra time. Leftover pack hours carry into the next month, so the real cost per month lands lower than the pack price, and lowest with the 50-hour pack.

Do you need Game Pass to use the packs?

No. Xbox says the packs work without a Game Pass subscription, for cloud-playable games you already own and some free-to-play games. Xbox also says paid playtime is ad-free and comes with shorter wait times. Details are in Xbox’s Cloud Playtime announcement.

That opens a new option for someone who plays only now and then. Ten hours of streaming for $3.99 is a small bill for a month when you only want to finish one game you already bought.

Xbox is also testing free cloud play with ads for Insiders. It has not said yet how that free tier will work for everyone. If you are weighing it against a console, our look at Xbox console, controller and game price changes gives more context.

What we don’t know yet

  • The exact November date when the packs and the Game Pass limits start for everyone.
  • Whether the prices go up after the introductory period.
  • Which games will be eligible. Xbox has not published a list.
  • Which countries get the packs. Xbox says availability may vary by market.

What to do now

  1. Check how much you actually stream. If you rarely hit 15 hours a month on Ultimate, nothing changes for you.
  2. If you stream every day, plan on the 50-hour pack. It is the cheapest per hour, and the hours do not expire.
  3. Make sure your home connection can handle it. A weak signal makes paid hours feel worse. Our guide to the best Wi-Fi routers for home explains what to look for.
  4. Streaming on a phone or TV? A proper controller helps. See our gaming accessories picks.

Watch for Xbox to name the November start date. We will update this page with the date and any price change when it does.
