Whatsapp desktop app now available on Windows and Mac

WhatsApp is in the news again because they have stepped up. The company said today that its apps are now available for Windows 8 and above, and for Mac OS X 10.9 and above. Yaay!!! Cheers to that. So people like me who have not been using its web client version can now use the desktop app. I think I like that very much.

“Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device,” the company said. That means you need the mobile app running on your phone for it to work. Also, your phone needs to be connected to the internet.

It’s quite simple to set up. You just need to download the desktop app from your web browser, select your operating system then scan a QR code using the WhatsApp mobile app. Once that is done, your existing conversations will load. Another good thing about this is that experience is the same as that on the mobile app and there will be support for native desktop notification.

To some, this might not be so much of a big deal, but before now, usage of whatsapp was limited and I think it’s good that we now have this desktop app because it allows for easy access and typing especially when you don’t want to reach for your phone. Today, whatsapp has more than 1 billion users.
