Watch: Fisayo Fosudo breaks down the newly launched MTN eSIM in explainer video

MTN has launched the Embedded SIM (eSIM) in Nigeria – the next step in the evolution of Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM cards). Unlike the physical SIM, you do not need to insert an eSIM into your phone as it is already built into your smartphone, device or wearable.

You simply activate the eSIM with your account profile as you normally would with a physical SIM.

Commenting on the launch were Chief Operating Officer at MTN; Mazen Mroue and Chief Transformation Officer MTN; Bayo Adekanmbi.

“We’re proud Turning Up embedded SIM (eSIM) technology first in Nigeria and this part of the world!”

“Customers depend on us to provide high quality, reliable and easy-to-use connectivity solutions. With the introduction of the eSIM, we will offer customers a seamless and distinctive digital experience with new levels of flexibility, simplicity and convenience”.

The comment from Bayo Adekanmbi reads:

“Today, @MTNNG broke another record- 1st eSIM in this part of the world. No physical SIM card, but virtual one with more security & possibilities of e-innovations like machine-to-machine for Health, Agric etc”.

The benefits of eSIM include that:

  • it allows you have more than one phone number associated to your smart device; particularly useful for people who want to manage personal and business lines, and
  • It is extremely convenient for frequent travelers, making it easier to switch between network operators.

The telecommunications company has also emphasized support of the The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) in enabling the technology, as quoted in a tweet by the Chief Operating Officer:

“Thank You MTNers taking this innovation to market, we also appreciate @NgComCommission support to enable this technology”.

Launched on July 15, 2020, the eSIM will run a trial for 12 months and is available to a limited number of subscribers who own compatible devices.
