Vodacom Business Nigeria has trained female students of Clemmy High School, Agodo-Egbe, Lagos, on Internet of Things (IoT) as part of its support for the Girls in ICT programme. The students who were students from SS1 and SS2 learned how IoT is used in ensuring people’s safety and in securing property in today’s world. They also toured the company’s facilities, exposing them to the importance of connectivity and data security to individuals and businesses in this milieu.
Clemmy High School emerged as winners of the App development and Quiz competition which was part of the Girls in ICT Day celebration last month, organised by E-Business Life. Vodacom’s aim of training female students in particular is to demystify the myth that ICT is for males, predominantly; encouraging more female students to choose ICT as their course of study at tertiary levels of education. The training also empowers female students to maximise their use of ICT, so that they are not left behind in the digital world.
Lanre Kolade, Managing Director, Vodacom Business Nigeria, urged ICT teachers to adopt fresh approaches to the subject to generate higher levels of interest among females. He said “The choice of studying ICT depends largely on the student’s interest in science subjects at the secondary level of education. Teachers must begin to adopt innovative ways of teaching the subject so that more students, especially females will not only become interested in ICT but choose to work in ICT industries upon completing their studies.” He equally advised the participants during the training to not be intimidated by physics, chemistry and biology but to enjoy these subjects and make them an integral part of their daily lives.
Miss Chidera Onyekuru and Miss Peace Agboola both SS2 students of Clemmy high school; and winners of the quiz and App development competition at the Girls in ICT Day celebration, were presented with brand new laptops by Lanre Kolade; for their brilliance and for Miss Agboola’s ingenious development of a Mobile App she named “Talk to me”. The app reads out loud text on a mobile device by waving the device with your hands.
Vodacom Business Nigeria, supporters of women empowerment and a strong promoter of youth empowerment through ICT has over the years through its Power to You project; trained students at all levels of education on the role of ICT in the further development of Nigeria. The project is aimed at giving students first-hand experience of new technologies that are driving the world’s largest economies which includes Nigeria.
