Spotify audiobooks in Nigeria are here, sold through an add-on called Audiobooks+, which costs ₦2,300 a month for 15 hours of listening, according to Spotify’s Nigeria site. New subscribers get the first month free. When those hours run out, a top-up reported at ₦2,700 adds 10 more.

The short version

You can now listen to audiobooks on Spotify in Nigeria, but you pay for listening time, not for unlimited books.

  1. Audiobooks+ costs ₦2,300 a month for 15 hours after a one-month free trial, which works out to about ₦153 an hour.
  2. Fifteen hours is about 30 minutes of listening a day for a month.
  3. The reported top-up of 10 hours for ₦2,700 costs about ₦270 an hour, roughly 76% more per hour than the monthly plan.
  4. Spotify says unused Audiobooks+ hours do not roll over into the next month.
  5. Spotify has not published the ₦2,700 top-up price, and top-ups are only for Premium accounts, so check your app before you buy one.

In plain terms: this works like a meter, not a buffet. The clock runs only while a book is playing, and whatever you do not use by the end of your billing month is gone.

How far ₦2,300 goes on Spotify audiobooks in Nigeria

Divide ₦2,300 by 15 hours and you pay about ₦153 for each hour you listen. That is our math, using Spotify’s listed price.

  • Listen for 30 minutes a day and the 15 hours last the whole month.
  • Finish a 10-hour book and you still have 5 hours left for the next one.
  • Listen for an hour on the way to work and an hour back, and the hours are gone in under eight working days.

For a commuter in heavy traffic, that last line is the one to plan around.

The top-up costs a lot more per hour

The reported top-up gives 10 hours for ₦2,700, or ₦270 an hour. That is about 76% more per hour than the monthly allowance. Spotify’s Nigeria help pages say top-up hours last 12 months from purchase and are used only after your monthly hours run out. Top-ups are sold to Premium accounts only, so if you are on the free plan, Audiobooks+ is your only way to get more hours.

If you keep running out, the cheaper fix is usually pacing: save long books for a month when you know you will have time to finish them.

Do you need Spotify Premium?

No. Spotify’s Nigeria site says you can add Audiobooks+ to the free plan as well as to Premium. Spotify describes Audiobooks+ as the main way to get audiobooks in its new markets, including Africa, in its audiobooks expansion announcement.

If you want both, the costs stack. Premium Individual costs ₦1,600 a month on Spotify’s Nigeria Premium page, with new subscribers paying ₦800 a month for the first six months under an offer that ends 31 October 2026. Add Audiobooks+ and full-price Premium plus audiobooks comes to ₦3,900 a month.

Rules worth knowing before you subscribe

  • Unused monthly hours expire when your next billing month starts. They are not refunded.
  • Time is counted for every playback at normal speed, so replaying a chapter uses hours again, and listening faster does not save any.
  • You can buy a single audiobook to keep instead of using your hours. Spotify has not listed Nigerian prices for single books.
  • You can download books to listen offline, which saves data and helps when the network drops. If your phone is full, our guide to freeing up storage without deleting photos helps.
  • Page Match lets you scan a printed book’s barcode and pick up the audio from the same page, according to Spotify.

Offline downloads are worth setting up if your network is unreliable. If an outage lasts more than a day, our explainer on when Nigerian rules say you are owed compensation covers what to ask for.

What we don’t know yet

  • How many Nigerian titles and authors are in the catalogue at launch.
  • What single audiobooks will cost in naira.
  • The official naira price of a top-up. Launch reports put it at ₦2,700.

What to do now

  1. Open Spotify, go to Settings and privacy, then Account, and check what your plan includes and what Audiobooks+ costs you.
  2. Start with one book you know you will finish this month.
  3. Download it on Wi-Fi so the listening does not eat your data.
  4. Check your remaining hours in the same Account screen before you buy a top-up.

We will update this page when Spotify confirms its top-up price or adds a cheaper plan.
