ChatGPT ads in Nigeria are now officially on the way. OpenAI said on 21 October that businesses in Nigeria and South Africa can now advertise inside ChatGPT, part of an expansion to 26 more countries. If you use the free version or the Go plan, that means sponsored posts under some answers. If you run a business, it means a new place to advertise, starting at ₦3,250 a day for an ad account billed in naira.
The short version
OpenAI has opened ChatGPT advertising to Nigeria and South Africa, bringing its ad business to 89 countries. Ads show only on the Free and Go plans, and a business billed in naira pays at least ₦3,250 a day.
- OpenAI announced on 21 October 2026 that ChatGPT Ads now cover 26 more countries, including Nigeria and South Africa, for 89 in total.
- Ads appear only for adults on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have none.
- Free users can switch ads off by accepting fewer messages and losing features such as image generation, but Go users cannot.
- A business billed in naira needs a minimum budget of ₦3,250 a day. Billed in dollars, the minimum is $25, about ₦33,610 at the CBN rate of ₦1,344.40 on 22 October.
- OpenAI has not given a date for when Free and Go users in Nigeria will start seeing ads.
In plain terms: ChatGPT is about to work more like Facebook or Google for people who do not pay for it. You keep using it for free, and some of your questions come back with a sponsored suggestion underneath. For Nigerian businesses, it is the first chance to put a product in front of people at the moment they ask ChatGPT which phone, school or bank to choose.
What ChatGPT ads in Nigeria will look like
OpenAI says ads sit apart from ChatGPT’s answer, are clearly labelled, and do not change what ChatGPT tells you. Here is who sees them, from OpenAI’s ads help page:
- Ads show on the Free and Go plans. People using ChatGPT without logging in can also see ads, limited to ones suitable for all ages.
- Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts get no ads.
- Accounts OpenAI identifies as belonging to someone under 18 get no ads.
- Ads do not appear next to personal health, mental health or politics, and political ads are not allowed.
- Temporary Chats show no ads.
OpenAI also says advertisers do not see your conversations and that it does not sell your data. Ads started in the US in February 2026, and OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since.
Can you turn ChatGPT ads off?
Partly. It depends on your plan.
- Free plan: you can go ad-free, but you pay with features. Open Settings, then Ads controls, choose “Change plan to go ad-free”, then “Reduce message limits”. You get fewer messages and lose features such as image generation and deep research. You can switch back to ads later.
- Go plan: there is no ad-free switch. Paying for Go does not remove ads.
- Plus and above: no ads at all.
Whatever your plan, you can make ads less personal. In Settings, then Ads controls, switch off “Personalize ads” and “Past chats and memory”, then tap “Delete ads data”. OpenAI says deleted ads data can take up to 30 days to clear. We walk through each switch, and how advertisers can use an email list to reach you, in our guide to ChatGPT ad settings.
What a ChatGPT ad campaign costs in naira
OpenAI sells ads through its self-service Ads Manager and through ad technology partners. Its help pages set the minimum daily budget by billing currency, and the naira is on the list. For an ad account billed in naira, the floor is ₦3,250 a day. The budget is an average over seven days, so some days can cost more. At the minimum, that means:
- Minimum daily budget: ₦3,250.
- Most it can spend in one day: twice the daily budget, ₦6,500.
- Most it can spend in seven days: seven times the daily budget, ₦22,750.
- A 30-day campaign at the minimum: about ₦97,500.
An account billed in US dollars has a higher floor: $25 a day, about ₦33,610 at the CBN official rate of ₦1,344.40 to the dollar on 22 October 2026. A 30-day campaign at that minimum is about $750, or roughly ₦1.01 million, and your bank’s dollar rate and card fees push the real cost higher. Campaigns can be set up to buy views, clicks or sales, and OpenAI does not publish a standard price for any of them.
One more catch for small businesses: OpenAI says some new self-service accounts can at first advertise only in their home country. They can target other countries after identity checks and a required level of spending at home.
What we don’t know yet
- The date ads will start showing to Free and Go users in Nigeria. OpenAI’s announcement covers advertisers, and its help page says ads roll out to users gradually.
- How an account’s billing currency is set. OpenAI’s budget table lists the naira, but its help pages do not say whether every Nigerian business can choose it.
- How many ads a free user will see in a day.
