SOLO S400 Review

SOLO Phone, Nigeria’s mobile phone manufacturing company, has launched the SOLO S400, an upgrade of its introductory model the SOLO S350.

The upgrade includes an improvement in version of the OS from Android 4.1 to 4.2, a dual core 1.0GHz processor, a 4 inch screen and longer lasting battery.

The S400 is the low end offering of the lot of the 3 Android-powered Dual SIM smartphones recently launched by SOLO (the S400, S410 and S500)

Let’s dig deeper into its specs……

Hardware

The S400 has a plastic body which is similar in design to most HTC Desire models. It has a 4-inch screen which is not scratch resistant, so you have to be carefull with the way you keep it.

Camera

It has a 3megapixel primary camera and a secondary VGA camera. Considering it’s a budget phone, the camera gives you the exact quality for its value.

Multimedia

The S400 comes preinstalled with SOLO View; SOLO’s app for streaming movies. You need a SOLO hotspot connection to be able to stream otherwise you would only be able to watch previously downloaded movies. The company has an agreement with Universal, Warner, Disney and IROKO so it’s all legal.

SOLO Music is the music player for the S400, something about the layout reminds me of windows 8 tiles. However, the audio quality is not surprisingly average. SOLO music also offers unlimited access to over 20 million songs for free.

Storage

The S400 comes with 4GB internal memory with microSD up to 32GB.

Battery

The S400 comes with a removable battery of 1500 mAh capacity which doesn’t last very long with heavy usage.

Performance

In terms of performance, the S400 is offers what most budget Android smartphones offer – an average experience of the Android world. The phone has a few hiccups but the only major setback is experienced when multitasking as apps close in the background because of the 512MB of RAM.

The Conclusion

The SOLO S400 is a good buy for the budget; it would have been greater if there was more storage space for the RAM but SOLO View brings something very different to the table and makes it all worth the experience.
