Post Ehingbeti 2021 Hub Activation: Leveraging on Technology Through the Pillars of Government

Before the Ehingbeti summit, the Lagos State government, in partnership with the leading technology platform, Techuncode hosted a preparatory Hub Activation for interested participants.

The preparatory hub activation was a training medium for youths and young adults to address and collaboratively engage in society’s key issues.

Also featuring in the series were stakeholders in the ecosystem cutting across the private and public sectors.

Themed “Shaping the future of Governance with technology”; Impact Hub hosted the session to harness and draw out ways technology can shape governance.

Keynote Speakers at the event were Kriston Wilson (Lead strategist Spurt Business consulting), Patrick Oromosele (CEO Impact Hub), and Isioma Udeozo (Previous Channel Lead English Speaking West Africa Cisco).

They shared insight based on working with and in the government and discussed how leveraging technology would have improved efficiency.

Some of the insights include;

  • Transparency and accountability in governance will increase the interest of innovation players in government.
  • Largely African Countries are playing catch up with the innovation Ecosystem, making it difficult for
    government to tap from the sector.
  • Increased number of forum discussions between policymakers and the innovation community will hasten the
    adoption of improved methods in governance.
  • Creating change within government can only be achieved using people from the outside government—people who do not have an existing bias or loyalty to the current systems.

However, the highlight of the session was when participants alongside panellist broke out into sessions.

The breakout sessions were divided according to the government’s four major pillars: security, accountability, leadership, and social development.

Chaired by the panelist, the breakout session was for the stakeholders to dive deeper into the theme and engage actively.

Below are some of the resolutions gotten from each breakout session.

Accountability

  • Platforms should show transparency of what stakeholders roles are.
  • Communicating whatsoever, the government is delivering through several mediums.

Leadership

One of the identified problems of poor governance is an ill-formed mindset. So, therefore;

  • Technology can be used as leverage to reorientate people, granting them access to information through a functional internet connection.
  • Providing ‘packets’ of information shared via USSD or via pre-recorded
    voice calls. This could come in handy by partnering with telecom companies.

Security

  • Improving data and identity management.
  • Supporting the police and security personnel, ensuring that they are equipped with the resources needed to address situations.

Social Development

  • Ensuring educated, skilled and experienced people go
    into government-appointed positions – private sector
    professionals.
  • Incentive / Reward system for civil servants – Helping
    they become role models within the government.
  • Encourage rating quality of service from the government.
