Nigerian Startups shine bright at the Global Startup Awards Africa

Nigerian startups topped the winners ‘ chart at the  Global Startup Awards Africa held recently.

GSA Africa which claims to be the largest independent startup ecosystem competition on the continent held in Addis Ababa,  Ethiopia. 

Sixteen startups from across the continent were  named winners of the different categories . 

Nigerian startups won four of these sixteen categories .

The categories won by Nigerian startups and the winners are;

Best Newcomer  – Awabah; a digital technology company focused on building wealth and providing financial sustainability to informal sector workers. 

Best Ed-Tech  – Dataleum; a technology training and consulting firm that develops, nurtures and deploys globally functional tech talents. 

Best HealthTech  –  Emergency Response Africa; a healthcare technology company that provides medical care to victims at the scene of the emergency and facilitates access to advanced hospital care. 

 Future Shaper Award –  Zuri Health; a  telemedicine company that uses apps, websites, and SMS services to provide affordable and accessible healthcare solutions.

These four Nigerian startups with the other African winners will participate in the global round. They will compete on an international stage of the Global Startup Awards and gain further recognition and support.

The other  12 categories and their winners include:

Startup of the Year – Hiryo (Egypt)

Best Mobility & Logistics – BasiGo (Kenya)

Best Greentech –  Coffee Resurrect (Ethiopia)

 Founder of the Year -Freeziana.com. ( Egypt )

Best Web 3.0 Startup  – Momint (South Africa )

 Best Agritech Startup –  MooMe (Tunisia)

Best Co-working Space –  Tech Buzz Hub (Uganda)

Best Commerce Tech –  Zofi Cash (Uganda)

VC of the Year –  Mo Angels ( Mauritius) 

Best Accelerator/Incubator Programme –  The American University in Cairo Venture Lab (Egypt)

Diversity Role Model of the Year award – Developers in Vogue (Ghana)

Ecosystem Hero –  Hani W. Naguib, a leading business designer and innovation consultant (Egypt)

The Global Startup Awards began in 2021.

The event has seen over 15,000 African innovators nominated from 54 countries. 

The GSA has enjoyed support from over 300 jury members, ambassadors, and hundreds of innovation hubs across the continent.

This year’s edition was organized in collaboration with;

  • the Global Innovation Initiative Group (GIIG)
  • the Ethiopian Ministry of Labour and Skills (MOLS), 
  • The Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT)  and 
  • the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) Ethiopia,

Speaking about the award, Jo Griffiths co-founder of the GSA said the event fosters understanding and connection as it “provides a common language for us all.”

He also pointed out that the aim of the GSA is “to raise the visibility of African innovation as a unifying mechanism that transcends borders, cultures, and nationalities as well as the diverse maturity levels of the various startup ecosystems.”

The GSA, according to Griffiths “provides a platform to implement a shared vision of scaled impact.”
