MTN Nigeria services to suffer as a result of insurgency, company says

MTN has hinted at a possible glitch in its service due to the increasing level of insecurity in the country.

This was announced by the local unit of the South African owned telecoms group on Tuesday. It buttressed the recurrent mass abductions, kidnappings for ransom, armed conflict between herdsmen and farmers, armed robberies and various insurgencies Nigeria has been dealing with recently.

In a message to customers, the telecommunications company wrote “Sadly, we must inform you that with the rising insecurity in different parts of Nigeria, service delivery to your organization may be impacted in the coming days.”

“This means that in some cases, our technical support team may not be able to get to your site and achieve optimum turnaround time in fault management as quickly as possible.”

Although it’s headquarters is in South Africa, MTN makes a third of its revenue from Nigeria among the 22 countries it operates across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

However, despite the financial glory, operating in Nigeria remains a tough nut to crack for the company. Quoting the World Bank, “Growth in Nigeria resumed in the fourth quarter after a COVID-19 induced recession but it lags the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, with food inflation, heightened insecurity and stalled reforms slowing the economy and increasing poverty.”
