Microsoft has announced the the total shut down of its one time popular instant messaging platform, MSN Messenger also known as Windows Live Messenger 15 years after it launched. The use base of the IM platform has dwindled over the years due to the emergence of Facebook, Whatsapp and other messaging app.
The news didn’t come as a surprise as MSN was near death a few years ago when Microsoft began to migrate users to Skype. Now the service will be completely shut down on October 31st but will still be available in until then.
MSN has been around before Facebook, Whatsapp, BBM,Twitter….. it was launched in 1999 to compete with AOL’s Instant Messenger (AIM) and now that its finally going away, it will surely be missed…. maybe not by many.
