Microsoft OneDrive Set to Launch Globaly

Microsoft is officially launching OneDrive around the globe today, the new name for SkyDrive following a trademark dispute according to sources at TechnoBuffalo. In addition to changing the name, Microsoft is adding a few new incentives and features to get more users to switch over to its cloud-based storage option. The changes apply to all platforms, including Android, Windows Phone, Xbox, Mac, iOS and Windows.

If you’re running Android, you can install the new OneDrive application for automatic backup of your photos and videos – though this will compete directly with Google Drive and Photos, which already provides an excellent service on the OS and i really don’t see how Microsoft hopes to convince Google drive users to switch their (One Drive) platform. If you decide to use the camera backup feature, you’ll get an additional 3GB of storage for free – Microsoft hopes to use this to lure people away from competing services.

Additionally, 7GB is included free for all users of OneDrive, though now Microsoft will now toss in up to 5GB of additional free storage through referrals. For each friend you add, you’ll get another 500MB of data until you’ve reached the 5GB limit.

I noticed i got an update an my Android phone today asking me to update Skydrive, after the update It  changes the name of the App to OneDrive and gives you all the features stated above. You can learn more about OneDrive by heading to Microsoft’s website.

Do you think Microsoft’s One Drive will be able to Compete strongly with Google drive and DropBox?
