Kenya’s Cybercrimes Bill 2016 proposes stiff penalties for Offenders |TechCity Update

Ethiopia is the latest African country to block access to social networking sites since Saturday due to exams. The authorities blocked access temporarily to these sites to prevent leakage of university entrance examination questions. “This is a temporary measure as the social networks serve as a distraction to the students,” Getachew Reda, the government spokesman told the AFP. Some of the social networking sites that couldn’t be accessed in the country include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Viber which was criticized by internet users in the country.

Kenya is set to revamp it’s judicial system with the passing of The Computer and Cybercrimes bill, 2016 which stipulates offences and punishments in the following regard; Interference with computer systems which then threatens national security; causes injury or death; threatens public health and safety or leads to a financial loss to any person will attract a fine of 20 million Kenyan shillings or imprisonment term of 10 years. Also included in the bill are harsh penalties for child pornography with fines not exceeding twenty million or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding twenty five years. In one that targets scammers, a person who fraudulently gains or leads to unlawful loss to others will be fined 20 million shillings or face imprisonment terms not exceeding 10 years.

Press secretary to Uganda President Yoweri Museveni shared a picture of the President sitting down on a chair by the roadside making a phone call. According to the press officer: “On the way from Isingiro District yesterday, President Museveni stopped at Kyeirumba Village to make a phone call. Curious residents gathered to look at the president, who after 30 minutes on phone, briefly interacted with them. They thanked the government for tarmacking the road linking Uganda to Tanzania through Isingiro.”
