iPhone 18 Announced: Everything Apple Just Revealed About the iPhone 18 Pro and Foldable iPhone

Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market.

At its September 2026 event, Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. The launches represent one of Apple’s biggest iPhone design changes in years.

There is also an important change to Apple’s usual launch strategy this year: the standard iPhone 18 was not announced alongside the Pro models. Reports indicate that Apple is pushing the base iPhone 18 and other lower-priced models into a later launch window.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Apple Has Finally Made a Foldable iPhone

The biggest announcement is undoubtedly the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

Rather than opening vertically like a traditional flip phone, the Duo opens out like a small book or passport. When unfolded, it provides a 7.6-inch display, giving users considerably more screen space than a conventional iPhone.

Apple has also focused heavily on making the device thin when unfolded, while using a custom hinge and titanium construction.

iPhone Duo Key Features

The first foldable iPhone includes:

  • 7.6-inch unfolded display
  • A separate outer display for use while folded
  • Custom-designed hinge
  • Titanium construction
  • A20 Pro chip
  • Apple’s C2 modem
  • Multi-window multitasking
  • Apple Pencil compatibility
  • Foldable-specific software features

Apple is positioning the Duo as more than a larger iPhone. The company is emphasizing productivity, with multiple apps able to run side by side on the expanded display.

How Much Does the Foldable iPhone Cost?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States.

That makes it Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet and places it firmly in the premium foldable category.

Apple says pre-orders begin on October 16, with the phone reaching customers on October 23, 2026.

For Nigerian buyers, the final retail price will depend on local taxes, duties, exchange rates, and retailer pricing, so the US starting price should not be treated as the Nigerian retail price.

iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max Are Official

Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

These are the company’s conventional flagship models for 2026 and come with significant hardware upgrades.

The starting prices are:

  • iPhone 18 Pro: $1,199
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: $1,299

Both are $100 more expensive than their respective predecessors.

The A20 Pro Chip Powers the New Pro Models

The iPhone 18 Pro models use Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.

The chip is designed to deliver improvements in processing performance and on-device AI, with Apple increasing the neural-processing capabilities of the system.

The significance isn’t simply about benchmark numbers.

As Apple pushes more AI processing directly onto the device, additional processing power can support features without requiring every task to be sent to the cloud.

The Camera Gets a Major Change

One of the most notable camera upgrades is the introduction of a variable-aperture main camera.

Instead of relying on a fixed aperture, the system can adjust the aperture to control how much light enters the lens.

That can provide greater flexibility in different lighting conditions and give photographers more control over exposure and depth of field.

Apple has also introduced improved camera features, including smart focus tracking.

Battery Life Gets Better

Apple is also promising improved battery performance.

The iPhone 18 Pro models feature a redesigned internal system and improved thermal management, with reports putting the Pro’s battery life at up to around 30 hours per charge under Apple’s stated testing conditions.

As always, actual battery life will vary considerably depending on network conditions, screen brightness, camera use, gaming, streaming, and other factors.

Apple’s C2 Modem Makes Its Debut

Apple is continuing its move toward controlling more of the technology inside its phones.

The new models use Apple’s C2 modem, reducing the company’s reliance on Qualcomm’s modem technology.

For users, the important question will be how the new modem performs in real-world conditions, particularly on demanding 5G networks.

What About Apple Intelligence?

AI remains a major part of Apple’s iPhone strategy.

The A20 Pro’s increased neural-processing capabilities support Apple’s push toward more on-device intelligence. Apple is also expanding Siri’s AI capabilities through iOS 27.

The company says much of its AI processing happens either directly on the device or through its privacy-focused Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

That approach is important because Apple is trying to make AI more useful without abandoning its longstanding privacy positioning.

Where Is the Standard iPhone 18?

This is one of the most unusual parts of Apple’s 2026 strategy.

Apple did not announce the standard iPhone 18 at the September event.

Instead, the company focused on its premium Pro models and the new foldable iPhone. Reports indicate that the standard iPhone 18, along with other more affordable models, is expected to arrive during a later launch cycle in 2027.

That means consumers looking for a less expensive new-generation iPhone may have to wait.

The Duo is clearly the more experimental product, while the 18 Pro is the safer choice for someone who simply wants Apple’s most advanced conventional iPhone.

Should You Buy the iPhone 18 Pro?

For someone upgrading from an older iPhone, the Pro models offer several meaningful improvements.

The upgrade makes more sense if you care about:

  • Smartphone photography
  • Battery life
  • On-device AI
  • High-end performance
  • Advanced camera controls
  • Long-term device ownership

However, owners of relatively recent Pro models may find fewer reasons to upgrade immediately.

The improvements are significant, but they don’t necessarily make an older flagship obsolete overnight.

Is the Foldable iPhone Worth $1,999?

That’s a much harder question.

The iPhone Duo offers something conventional iPhones simply cannot: a much larger screen that folds into a phone-sized form factor.

For users who regularly multitask, read documents, edit content, work on the move, or simply want a larger display, that could be compelling.

But the $1,999 starting price is substantial.

And because this is Apple’s first foldable, buyers may also want to wait and see how the hinge, display durability, battery performance, and repair costs hold up over time.

What Apple’s 2026 Launch Really Means

The iPhone 18 Pro is an evolution of Apple’s flagship formula.

The iPhone Duo is something different.

By entering the foldable market, Apple is acknowledging that the smartphone’s traditional rectangular design isn’t the only direction the category can take. The company has also chosen to enter the market at an extremely high price, suggesting that it sees foldables as a premium product rather than a mainstream replacement for the iPhone.

For Apple, this is one of its biggest hardware changes since the iPhone X era.

The iPhone 18 announced today is not quite the launch many people expected.

There is no standard iPhone 18 in the September lineup. Instead, Apple has focused attention on its premium iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and introduced the company’s first foldable smartphone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo

The Pro models bring meaningful improvements to cameras, processing, battery life, connectivity, and AI. But the foldable Duo is the announcement that could have the biggest long-term impact.

Whether Apple’s foldable strategy succeeds will ultimately depend on how well the Duo performs outside the launch presentation. For now, though, one thing is clear: Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone race, and the iPhone is changing with it.
