What Exactly is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Technology analysts have termed the Internet of Things, IoT for short, as a network of all objects that are accessible through the internet. These objects are technological in nature and have influence over decisions that are made, who makes them, when they are made, as well as where and how they are made. They communicate and interact with internal states or the external environment.

Wikipedia puts it this way: ‘’The Internet of Things (IoT, also Cloud of Things or CoT) refers to the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing like devices within the existing Internet infrastructure. Typically, IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes beyond machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and covers a variety of protocols, domains, and applications’’

In simple English, the Internet of Things is simply a term used to explain the level of technological advancement we are experiencing today. Most technological gadgets are linked to the internet – your smart phone, laptop, iPad, TV, printer… and the list goes on.

However the Internet of Things is not just limited to technological gadgets, it also involves software (cloud computing and the likes) and even the nature of our jobs (digital marketing, blogging, programming). There are many internet related jobs in our time today. A company like Facebook book for example, was nowhere near existence in the days of generation X and Y – during the 80’s.

IoT has become an integral part of our lives and existence as we know it would not be possible without the Internet of Things.
