How to check your polling unit before election

The Nigerian 2023 general elections will kick off in less than 24hours and  some voters still have not verified their exact polling units.

There are 176, 974 polling units across the country and INEC has said voters can only vote in the polling unit where their name is enlisted. This means a voter can only vote in one specific polling unit from the over 176k locations.

Here’s how to know your enlisted polling unit. You can identify your PU in either of two ways:

  1.  Via SMS

You can simply text your state (registration state), your last name (as registered) and the last 6 digits of your VIN to 09062830860  or to  09062830861.

The response will be your polling unit name.

  • 2.  The INEC WEBSITE.

Visit the INEC website at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org

Fill out the boxes as required with the state you registered in, your last name, first name and date of birth. Make sure to fill in these details exactly as it is in the registration process. A difference in any of the information required will result in your name not found in the register.

For example, if you registered as “OLUBUNMI NWACHUKWU GOJE,” but type “BUNMI NWACHUKWU GOJE,” the portal will return saying your record wasn’t found.

After filling out all the boxes, click on the “I am not a robot” box and then proceed to click on the “check status” which would be green if all the required boxes are filled.

If all the details are correct, the next page displayed will bring details including LGA, your polling unit and polling unit code.

The polling unit code will appear like this: 39 – 14 – 08 – 041.

You can also use your Voter Identification Number (VIN) to check your polling unit and code.

Only the last 5 digits of your VIN will be required if you’re taking this route.
