The GTA 6 file size is up to 212 GB, Rockstar Games says, and preloading starts Nov. 10, nine days before the game launches on Nov. 19. On Xbox in the US, that means Sunday evening, Nov. 9. If your console is nearly full, clear the space this weekend so the download can finish before launch day.
The short version
Rockstar has confirmed when Grand Theft Auto VI preloads and how much space it needs. Here is what to clear, how long the download takes, and the settings that make it happen on its own.
- GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB of free space, depending on your console, according to Rockstar’s preload FAQ.
- On PS5, preload starts at midnight local time on Nov. 10. On Xbox Series X|S, it starts at 12 a.m. GMT on Nov. 10, which is 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 9.
- At 100 Mbps, a 212 GB download takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes. At 50 Mbps, plan on more than 9 hours.
- PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive, but you can park other games there to free up space.
- Auto-downloads must be on, and the console must be on or in Rest Mode (PS5) or Sleep mode (Xbox), for the preload to start by itself.
In plain terms: 212 GB is a big chunk of any console’s storage. If you have owned yours for a while, that space is probably already taken, and the download itself can eat most of an evening.
When GTA 6 preload starts on PS5 and Xbox
Rockstar’s preload FAQ, last updated Nov. 3, gives two different start times:
- PlayStation 5: “digital pre-load begins at midnight local time in your respective time zone on November 10, 2026.”
- Xbox Series X|S: “digital pre-load begins globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, 2026.” In the US that is Sunday evening: 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT, 5 p.m. MT and 4 p.m. PT on Nov. 9.
The game itself launches Nov. 19. Preloading means the files are already on your console, so you can start playing the moment it launches instead of waiting on a download.
How much space the GTA 6 file size really takes
Rockstar says the preload “will require up to 212 GB of available space depending on your device.” It has not published a separate figure for each console, so plan for the full 212 GB and leave a little extra room.
If you bought the boxed edition, our earlier piece on the GTA 6 price and what is in the box explains how that version works.
How long will the download take?
We did the math for a 212 GB download at steady speeds. Real speeds are usually lower than the top speed on your plan, so treat these as best cases.
- 50 Mbps: about 9 hours and 25 minutes
- 100 Mbps: about 4 hours and 45 minutes
- 300 Mbps: about 1 hour and 35 minutes
- 1 Gbps: about 28 minutes
If your internet plan has a monthly data cap, the download alone uses a big share of it. On a 1 TB cap, 212 GB is about a fifth of your month. A wired Ethernet cable to the console, or a better spot for your router, can help. Our home Wi-Fi router guide covers what to look for.
How to free up space on PS5
Sony’s storage help page lays out the steps:
- To see how much space you have, go to Settings > Storage.
- To delete a game, go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, pick the games you no longer play, and select Delete. You keep the games you bought and can download them again later.
- To keep a game without it taking internal space, move it to a USB drive set up as extended storage. Sony says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage, so you copy them back when you want to play. PS4 games can run straight from the USB drive.
- The USB drive must be SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, between 250 GB and 8 TB, and plugged in directly, not through a USB hub.
How to free up space on Xbox Series X|S
Open your storage settings on the console and look at which games take the most space. Uninstall the ones you have finished; anything you bought can be downloaded again. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 can run from external storage, so the safest plan is to free the full 212 GB on the console itself.
Turn on automatic downloads before Nov. 10
The preload only starts on its own if your console is ready for it. Rockstar says:
- PS5: “Players must have auto-downloads enabled, and their console must be powered on or powered off to Rest Mode.”
- Xbox: “Players must have automatic updates enabled, and their console must be powered on or in Sleep mode.”
Two more things to do this week: make sure your preorder shows up in your game library, and watch out for anyone offering an early download, a “free” copy or a phone version of GTA 6. The only real places to get it are your console’s own store and official retailers.
