Google Trains Nigerian Journalists On Effective Election Reporting

In support of the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria, the world’s biggest search engine Google has trained media practitioners in the country on how to deploy tech tools to effectively cover the general elections.

At the Google Data Tools for Election Reporting Workshop held in Lagos, the company exposed journalists and other Nigerian media practitioners to Google Advance Search, Google Trends, Social Media Streams, Google Alert and Tabula. These according to the company, could bring about effective reportage of the forthcoming February general elections in Nigeria.

In his remark at the training, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone, West Africa, at Google said there are several tools that could be deployed to source for data.

These tools, he said, would give media experts the picture of what was happening at a particular time at different places and getting it to the public. He added that the tools had actually eased off the challenges of manpower, expensive time and technical skills which were experienced by media houses.

“These tools can be used to monitor trends about elections in real time, whereby impressions about candidates and even the party are seen. With the tools, you can come out with creative visualisation that helps you to communicate your news to the public,” he said.
