If your new $149.99 Kindle shows a glow along the edges of the page at night, Amazon says that is expected, not a fault. The Kindle light bleed some owners are seeing on the 2026 model comes from the new flush, edge-to-edge design, and Amazon’s fix for now is to turn the brightness down.
The short version
Owners of the new 6-inch Kindle report a glow or bright lines at the screen edges, mostly in dark mode. Amazon says the glow is a side effect of the new color bezel design and suggests lower brightness in dark mode.
- The new Kindle costs $149.99 with 16GB, or $189.99 for the 32GB aluminum version.
- In a statement to Android Authority, reported on Oct. 9, 2026, Amazon said the glow can appear in dark mode at maximum brightness in a dark room.
- You can test your own Kindle in about two minutes with dark mode and the brightness turned all the way up.
- If the glow shows at the settings you actually read with, start a return or exchange before your order’s return window closes.
The real shift: Amazon rebuilt the screen to get rid of the raised border around the page. That makes the Kindle thinner and lets the case color run edge to edge, but it also puts the front light right at the edge of the display, where some of it now shows.
What is causing the Kindle light bleed?
In its launch announcement, Amazon said the new Kindle uses a “reverse stack” display with a flush front, and that this “required rethinking how the display, front light, and touch layers are assembled and bonded.”
Owners on Reddit and other forums started posting photos of a glow or thin bright lines along the edges of the screen soon after the device went on sale. In a statement to Android Authority, reported on Oct. 9, 2026, Amazon said that “when a device is in dark mode with brightness at max in a dark setting, customers may see a glow around the edges of the book.” The company said this “was expected in order for us to achieve a color bezel” and recommended “a lower brightness setting when in dark mode.”
Most reports so far involve the base Kindle, in both the plastic and aluminum versions. The new Paperwhite and Colorsoft opened for preorder on a rolling basis, so fewer owners have them yet.
How to test your Kindle in two minutes
- Go to a dark room.
- Turn on dark mode (white text on a black page) from the quick settings menu.
- Push the brightness to maximum and open any book.
- Look along all four edges of the page for a glow or a bright line.
- Now set things back to how you normally read, and look again. This second check is the one that matters.
If you only see the glow at full brightness in the dark, you may never notice it day to day. If you see it at the brightness you actually use, that is worth acting on while you still can.
Should you return or exchange it?
That depends on how you read. Amazon’s position is that the glow is part of the design, so a replacement may look the same. If it bothers you at your normal settings, here is what we would do:
- Open Your Orders on Amazon and check the return window shown for your Kindle. Note the date.
- Contact Amazon customer service through the app or website, describe what you see, and ask whether an exchange is an option. Photos taken in the dark help.
- If an exchange unit shows the same glow, return it for a refund while you are still inside the window.
- If you bought from another store, check that store’s return policy, since it may differ from Amazon’s.
Keep the box and all accessories until you decide. Your books, notes and highlights sync to your Amazon account, so nothing is lost if you swap devices.
Thinking about buying one?
If you mostly read in daylight or with the light low, the glow is unlikely to matter. If you read in bed in dark mode with the light up high, wait for more owner reports, or test one in a store before you buy. What to watch
Watch for a software update that changes how bright the edge light gets in dark mode, and for reports from owners of the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft once those ship. Until then, test early so you are not deciding after your return window has closed.
