Google Drive Adds Quick Video Editing Shortcut

Google is making video editing a little easier for its Workspace users. The company has introduced a new Google Drive video editing shortcut that allows users to open videos saved in Drive directly in Google Vids, its built-in editing tool.

When previewing a video stored in Google Drive, users will now notice a new “Open” button at the top right corner of the preview screen. Clicking this automatically launches the file in Google Vids, eliminating the need to manually open the editor. Once inside Google Vids, users can perform simple edits such as trimming clips, adding text, inserting background music, and making quick adjustments.

Enabled by Default for Workspace Users

The new shortcut will be enabled by default for Google Workspace accounts. However, organization admins will have the option to disable the feature if they choose. Google began rolling out the update on August 21st, but the company says it may take up to two weeks before it becomes available to all users globally.

This addition is part of Google’s continuous effort to improve video handling within Drive. Over the past year, Google has made several updates, including:

  • A new video player introduced in October last year for smoother playback.
  • A Gemini AI-powered feature launched in May that can generate automatic summaries of Drive videos.

Why This Matters

The Google Drive video editing shortcut is a useful time-saver for professionals, students, and content creators who frequently store and manage video files on Drive. Instead of downloading a video or manually navigating to Google Vids, the one-click shortcut streamlines the process.

With video becoming a central part of both business and education, Google’s updates show a clear commitment to enhancing productivity and collaboration. Users can now preview, edit, and even summarize videos more efficiently without leaving Drive.
