Africans are not quite familiar with the idea of rebate shopping which is what makes it a huge deal that Koumia.com, a Nigerian shopping start-up has decided to make the rebate system its focal point.
For those who do not understand what this means, rebate shopping is aimed at rewarding online shoppers with cashback for shopping with their favourite retailers. For Koumia.com, it aggregates products from partnering Nigerian online retailers on its website on which registered shoppers can now get cashback earnings.
Abdel Aziz who is one of the founding partners and also in charge of product development threw more light on this as he explained the process saying that, once a registered user clicks on a product of interest, the user is directed to the websites of partnering retailers to complete the order. Usually, once an order is fulfilled, pending cashback earnings would be made active in which the user can request to be paid through bank transfer or electronically. User can also save his earnings on his dashboard if he wants and can request for it anytime he wishes.
If you thought that there was no money for the Abdel Aziz, Patrick and Ahmed who are the founding partners of Koumia.com, then you got it all wrong. Koumia.com generates revenue for referring a user to a partner’s site on a commission basis. However, they give back to the shoppers form the commission that is made.
Koumia.com is presently only in Nigeria but targets other countries as well. According to Patrick, “it would be great conquering the Nigerian market before moving out since the country leads in ecommerce across Africa at the moment”.
