A class action suit was filed against Google

A class action suit was filed against Google over unauthorized in-app purchases on Android devices by children by the U.S District Court for the Northern District of California, one of the law firms that filed the suit said Monday.

The class action suit is brought on behalf of all persons in the United States who paid for unauthorized purchases of game currency by their minor children through the Google Play app store.

Many games in the Google Play store are offered free but are designed to induce in-app purchases of virtual supplies, ammunition, fruits and vegetables, or cash, the class action law firms involved in the case noted in the complaint.

“These games are highly addictive, designed deliberately so, and tend to compel children playing them to purchase large quantities of game currency, amounting to as much as $100 per purchase or more,” according to the complaint.

A user would need to authenticate their accounts by entering a password before purchase of an app or by buying in-game currency. According to the filing of the lawsuit, Google permits the user even if it is a minor to make in-app purchases when the password is entered and can be logged in for as long as 30 minutes without re-logging in.

This makes Google acquire millions of dollars, as the minors are allowed to make expensive in-app purchases without entering a password. This of course is done without the authorization of their parents, not forgetting parents’ credited cards that are automatically debited for these according to the complaint.

The case against Google has requested for a Jury trial, which is set to ask payments for damages for affected.
