A tablet that suits a 6-year-old can drive a grandparent up the wall, and the other way round. Kids need a case that survives the floor and controls a parent can trust. Older adults need big text, easy video calls and as few surprise pop-ups as possible.

This guide picks the best budget tablet for each of those jobs. We updated it on Oct. 15, 2026, because Amazon’s new Kids Tablets have arrived and the standard iPad no longer costs what it did.

What changed this month

  • Amazon’s new Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11 began shipping Oct. 14, starting at $229.99 and $329.99. Each size comes in an ages 3 to 5 version with a soft bumper and an ages 6 to 12 version with a slim hard case.
  • The new kids’ tablets run the Google Play Store, and every download needs a parent’s approval. Amazon’s Fire Kids tablets never had Google Play.
  • The standard iPad now starts at $449 on Apple’s store, up from $349, so our old “best overall” pick is no longer a budget buy.

The quick answer

Best budget pick for most homes: Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+. Best for kids: Amazon Kids Tablet 8, in the version for your child’s age. Bigger screen for schoolwork: Amazon Kids Tablet 11. Worth stretching for: iPad 11-inch (A16). Seniors new to technology: GrandPad.

1. Best budget pick for kids and seniors: Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+

Best for: a shared family tablet, older kids, and grandparents who already use an Android phone.

Why we picked it: you get an 11-inch screen, 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage, with room to add a microSD card of up to 2TB for photos and downloaded shows. Samsung’s Easy mode enlarges icons and text and strips the home screen back to the basics, which helps a first-time user. Samsung launched it in January at $249.99. Best Buy listed it at $299.99 when we checked on Oct. 15.

The downside: 6GB of memory is enough for streaming, video calls and homework, but it can feel slow with lots of apps open. The 8GB version comes with 256GB of storage and costs more.

Skip if: the rest of the family uses iPhones and you want FaceTime to just work.

2. Best for kids: Amazon Kids Tablet 8

Best for: kids from preschool to about 12, and parents who want tight controls from day one.

Why we picked it: pick the ages 3 to 5 version for a soft bumper case, or the ages 6 to 12 version for a slim hard case. Both come with a year of Amazon Kids+, Amazon’s ad-free library of books, shows and games. The Parent Dashboard app on your own phone sets time limits, filters content and can pause the tablet remotely. Google Play is there, but nothing installs without your approval.

The downside: after the first year, Kids+ costs $7.99 a month with Prime or $8.99 without, which is $95.88 to $107.88 a year. Amazon lists a one-year limited warranty, so look at what drop cover comes with the version you buy.

Skip if: you want something under $150. The new line starts at $229.99.

3. Bigger screen for schoolwork: Amazon Kids Tablet 11

Best for: school-age kids who do homework, reading and video calls with family on the same device.

Why we picked it: it has the same parent controls and year of Kids+ as the Kids Tablet 8, with a sharper 11-inch screen and 8GB of memory, which helps with schoolwork and split-screen apps. It also comes in ages 3 to 5 and ages 6 to 12 versions.

The downside: at $329.99 it costs more than our top pick, the Galaxy Tab A11+, before you count Kids+ after year one.

Skip if: your child is close to 13. They will outgrow kid mode quickly, and a regular tablet with Google Family Link costs less.

4. Worth stretching for: iPad 11-inch (A16)

Best for: families already on iPhone, and grandparents whose main job for a tablet is FaceTime with the grandkids.

Why we picked it: Apple supports its iPads with software updates for years, and its accessibility settings are among the best on any tablet, from Zoom and larger text to Assistive Access, a simplified mode with big buttons for calls, messages and photos. Screen Time and Family Sharing give parents solid controls.

The downside: it starts at $449 on Apple’s store, and the A16 chip does not support Apple Intelligence, Apple’s AI features.

Skip if: your budget tops out near $300.

5. Best for seniors new to technology: GrandPad

Best for: an older adult who has never used a smartphone or tablet and mainly wants to see family.

Why we picked it: family members join a private network, so calls and photos come from people the user knows, and GrandPad says that network blocks spam and scams. Relatives can change settings from their own phones. The Premium plan adds mobile data and voice calls, so the tablet works with no Wi-Fi to set up.

The downside: every GrandPad is sold with a monthly plan. The tablet is $349 at grandpad.net, and plans run $25 a month for Wi-Fi only (video calls, no voice calls), $45 with 3GB of data and voice calls, or $65 for the top plan. Even the cheapest plan costs $300 a year, about what a Galaxy Tab A11+ costs outright.

Skip if: the person is comfortable with a phone. A regular tablet in Easy mode or Assistive Access will cost far less over time.

Should you buy a leftover Fire Kids tablet?

Stores still sell the Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 10 Kids. Amazon’s security update page promises updates for at least four years from purchase when you buy one new from Amazon, or until a set date if that is later. Bought from another store, the set date is what you can count on: Dec. 31, 2029 for the 2024 Fire HD 8 Kids and the 2023 Fire HD 10 Kids, and Jan. 28, 2029 for the 2022 Fire HD 8 Kids.

That is roughly three years of updates at most, and no Google Play. A clearance price has to be a real bargain to beat the new Kids Tablets. If your family already owns a Fire Kids tablet, it keeps working, and you do not need to replace it this year.

What about cheap tablets from brands you have never heard of?

Under-$100 Android tablets look good on paper, but many stop getting security updates soon after you buy them, if they get any. For a child’s tablet or a grandparent’s, that matters more than the spec sheet. Stick with a brand that publishes how long it will support the device.

How we picked

We have not tested every tablet on this list. These picks are based on maker specifications, published security update policies, parental control and accessibility features, and the full cost of ownership, including subscriptions and plans. Prices were checked on Oct. 15, 2026, and change often.
