Apple App Store may soon approve third party app stores on iOS

The European Union’s Digital Marketing and Service Act might force the Apple App Store to permit app downloads from third-party sources.

In a recent update from Apple reporter Mark Gurman, App store may be in the process of a new development. iPhone users could start seeing and having access to third-party app stores. Referring to this possible development, Gurman said software engineers at Apple are engaging “in a major push to open up key elements.”

These key elements, once opened, will enable users of the platform to download apps without using the app store. This improvement is coming in light of the Digital Marketing and Service Act from the European Union. Apple will have until 2024 to make this improvement to its App Store.

With the launch of iOS 17, Apple users around the world will be able to download apps without using the App Store. A move Apple has avoided for years, giving credence to its unique ecosystem. This is a hard pill to swallow for Apple, but there is little or nothing that can be done about it.

Once in place, the new Apple App Store third-party app acceptance will give developers some breathing space. This will liberate them from the 30% commission Apple levies them for all payments on their apps. Thanks to the European Union, this will be a win for developers as they can make their apps available via third-party app stores.

A bunch of remarkable changes are coming to Apple’s products in the coming years courtesy of the European Union. One such change is the switch to USB-C ports on all its devices. Future updates will throw more light on this issue and its development.
