A few days ago, Elon Musk promised to bring a new Twitter verification system to users across the world. The roll-out of this feature was then delayed until after the US midterm elections. Finally, users started getting this new feature and certain users got two verification ticks, but it didn’t last for long.
While it lasted, the double verification ticks were meant to tell the verified apart from users who got a tick by paying the Blue subscription of $7.99 monthly. Users who got two ticks are journalists, politicians, celebrities, and other notable organisations.
On November 9, most users began noticing a second verification tick. This tick came directly under the profile picture and username, and it read “Official” pointing out that the account falls under one of the categories in the previous paragraph.
The thrill of this new verification mark was gathering momentum and criticism but before long, Elon Musk’s team of engineers took it down. There has been no explanation as to why this feature went down and if it will become available again. But, the Chief Twit took to his Twitter account to share that his social media application “will do lots of dumb things in the coming months.”
Musk’s tweet goes on to say that his team “will keep what works and change what doesn’t” as one will do in a test lab. This tweet from Musk might imply that the double verification tick was a dumb idea and might not be coming back to the platform. To put the final nail in the coffin, the Twitter Support page went live to inform users that the “Official” label feature would not be coming back anytime soon.
