Xiaomi unveils the Mi5, its ceramic backed flagship at MWC 2016

Xiaomi was also present at MWC 2016 and just yesterday the Chinese smartphone manufacturer unveiled its latest flagship – the Mi5.

Powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor processor (also found in samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge), the Mi5 comes with a 5.15-inch display and is sandwiched in glass (or ceramic, on the high end).

Barra touted that Snapdragon 820 is a big deal for the device, given that it’s “100 percent faster than the Snapdragon 810” and the GPU is “40 percent” faster but consumes 50 percent less battery life, which is a notable improvement.

It also comes with 4GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, a front fingerprint sensor, a physical home button, a 3,000mAh battery, a 16MP rear camera and a 4MP selfie camera. The Mi5 weighs only 129 g and is 7.25mm thick.

In terms of design, tech analysts who’ve had a chance at handling the device have spoken highly about how beautiful it looks and the fact that it can be mistaken for the Samsung Galaxy S7. Considering that this device will be sold for about 50% cheaper than the Galaxy S7, this device sounds awesome.

There are three Mi5 models. The Mi5 Pro which I’ve described here, the entry level version which would be encased in glass and not ceramic and will have 32GB of storage and the mid-range version which will come with 64GB of storage.

The device will be launched first in China sometime in March and soon after that India and ‘elsewhere’. Considering that Xiaomi phones are currently being sold in Nigeria, I think I can look forward to having this device in my hands for a full review sometime in the distant or not-so-distant future, amen.
