This convenience of default settings is useful, but default WiFi settings are designed for general use only, not for the specific conditions and needs of every home network. The default settings may function adequately, but they may not provide the performance that you are looking for, which is why it is always recommended to configure and change the default WiFi settings for your home network.
Still, some people advocate using default WiFi settings because they are of the view that these settings work best and not everyone knows which settings to change. However, you should avoid using default WiFi settings, since they are not ideal forevery home, and below we have explained why.
Default Settings Are Designed for Convenience
Default settings are designed for convenience only because manufacturers want their routers to work for a wide range of customers. A default configuration and settings tend to prioritise compatibility and ease of installation rather than providing maximum performance in one particular environment. A router does not know in advance where it will be placed, how many neighbouring WiFi networks exist, or how many devices will connect.
As a result, the default settings are designed for convenience rather than to guarantee the best possible configuration of each feature.
The Default WiFi Password May Not Be Ideal
Most WiFi routers ship with a randomly generated password printed on a label, and that password is usually strong, but it is difficult to remember that password or manage it across multiple devices. Therefore, one of the first settings worth reviewing is changing the WLAN password.
The default WiFi password, although strong, is not ideal since you cannot memorise it. Instead, using a password that you can easily remember and that is unique to your network is much easier to manage across different devices.
Changing Router Administrator Credentials Is Necessary
Router credentials are different from WiFi passwords and provide access to the settings and admin panel of the WiFi router through an IP address, such as http://192.168.1.1. Most manufacturers use a combination of default admin credentials, which anyone can find easily on the internet by searching for the router’s name and model.
Using the default admin credentials puts your entire WiFi router and network at risk, since anyone who is connected to the router can access the admin interface of the router and modify important settings, including WiFi security. By changing the default admin credentials, you protect your router and network configuration from unauthorized access.
Automatic Channel Selection May Not Always Be Optimal
WiFi routers use radio channels to communicate. Most WiFi routers are configured to select channels automatically based on their assessment of the wireless network. This often works well in most environments and conditions; however, automatic selection is not guaranteed to choose the best option for every situation.
For instance, in an apartment building, there may be dozens of nearby WiFi networks, all using the same channels, which can lead to network congestion, interference, and reduced performance. If you are experiencing network congestion or reduced performance, configuring channel settings and manually selecting channels can resolve this issue.
Default Security Settings Need Reviewing
Although most modern WiFi routers come with better security default settings than their older counterparts, using the default security settings is still not recommended. Some routers don’t come with any security settings enabled by default, which also means an open network without a WiFi password, while those that do come with default security settings aren’t properly configured.
You should review security settings and ensure that you are using a modern WiFi security protocol such as WPA3, that the router firmware is the latest, that the guest network is enabled, and that the firewall is turned on.
