What is a Twitter Community and how can you join one?

What is a Twitter community? Collins Eshiet explains what a Twitter community is and how you can join one

Twitter is one of the most used social media platforms in the world, with over 335 million monthly users and a strong emphasis on real-time information. A Twitter community can simply be a group of people who share the same ideas on Twitter.

Exciting and free as Twitter is, there are quite a number of people on Twitter who find it hard getting into conversations. Partly because some conversations are not geared towards their line of interest or simply because it seems like people have already formed cliques on the platform. Well, there is a solution for such people. People who are either looking for a community where they fit in or where they can share their thoughts freely and be appreciated.

Twitter Communities at a glance

The start of this year saw a new feature on Twitter known as Twitter community come to a wider audience; both on Apple and Android devices. This means that people of like mind can interact even without following or knowing each other prior. As long as you have a shared interest. This way, you find Twitter more useful and you get into the swing of things faster.

Often times, people say, “Twitter is fun!” But some users (new and niche) debate that assertion and that’s because they haven’t experienced the exciting engagement (tweet-reply-quote-retweet) that happens on the app.

How to join a Twitter Community

The first step a take to join a Twitter community is to create a Twitter account, if you already have one, you are good to go. The account in question must be a public Twitter account. Currently, there is no support for private accounts.

To curtail the type of people that join a community, every Twitter user interested in joining a community must receive an invite. So, once you have found a good community, tweet to or message the admin or moderator indicating your interest to join his/her community. (An admin owns the community and a moderator manages a Twitter community).

Once the admin sends an invite, tap on the link and join. You will be added to the community. Please note that a Twitter community is a new feature, in the coming month’s Twitter might make searching for a community less tedious (possibly by just using the search tab).

Communication is key in every relationship, so you need to communicate with your new Twitter community. To do this, tweet to the community. This is quite different from tweeting to your followers. Once you tap the tweet button, you will get an option to tweet either to “everyone” or your desired community. Tap on the option to tweet to your new community, and your tweet will only be visible to the members of the community.

If you do not have this feature yet, consider updating your Twitter app. Once you get this feature, find a community that perfectly suits you and make new friends that share the same ideas with you!
