Tips to Help Increase the Battery Life of Your MacBook

Is your MacBook battery running out too quickly?

Here are useful tips that will increase the battery life if you use a MacBook pro or MacBook air.

For starters, monitoring the battery percentage can save you some trouble, so it is advised that you enable the “show percentage” option on your MacBook which can be done by clicking on the battery icon at the top of the screen and from the dropdown menu, click ‘show percentage’.

Secondly, you would need to check the condition of your battery and you do not need to see a technician to do this please. Simply hold the option key on your MacBook keyboard and click on the battery icon at the top of the screen. You will either see “Normal” or “Replace soon”.

When you unplug your charger from your MacBook, the next best thing to do is dim the brightness of the screen in order to save power. You have to disable the MacBook’s auto brightness feature by going to ‘System preferences’, click display and uncheck ‘Automatically adjust brightness’. To now adjust the brightness of your pc, press the F1 button on the keyboard or F1 and FN.

All recently released MacBook’s come with a lit keyboard which is great when you are typing in the dark. However, that drains battery life and can be disabled! All you need do is press and hold the F5 key on your keyboard or the FN+F5 key and to turn the keyboard light back on, press F6 or FN+F6.

Also, if you are not using a flash drive that is connected to your MacBook, disconnect it because it uses up your battery as well as charging your phone or tablet with a USB cord.

Other things you should check that drain battery on your MacBook;

  • Programs that you have finished working on. Just close them instead of leaving them ‘idle’. Click both the Command key and Q key or the “Quit” option on the menu bar.
  • Updating your software also improves battery life. Click the Apple logo and select “Software update” or update your applications from the App store.
  • Turn off your Bluetooth. If you use a Bluetooth mouse, you might forget, so here’s a reminder.
