Last week, I got a call from someone and the line was very choppy. She said, “Sorry ma, let me call you back with my personal line.” My phone rang again within seconds.

Person: Good afternoon ma. Can you hear me now, ma?
Me: Yes, I can. Good afternoon.
P: Okay, thanks ma. I was asking if you know (redacted)?
M: Who? I’m not s…
P: Ma, she is owing us at (incoherent) and she has refused to pay.
M: (Upon realisation, now a tad upset) So, why are you calling me? How did you even get my number?
P: We saw your number from… ermm… she put your number as next of kin.
M: (slightly livid) That is a LIE! I don’t know this person and ONLY my family members make me next of kin! What is wrong with you people???
P: Sorry ma, but… (I hang up because I’m not about to lose my salvation on this bad behaviour)

This episode of the TechCity Podcast would have been titled “Loan apps are stark raving mad!” but I was not sure how that title would rank on Search. Ok, just kidding. But, from the awfully intrusive manner with which they market their products to the destructive ways they demand repayment, you will be stunned by the sinister methods of loan apps in Nigeria as revealed by our guest on this episode.

On the flip side however, are the customers who are not forthcoming with repayments giving loan app operators in Nigeria the effrontery to breach consumer and data laws. And is any of this legal? Your guess is as good as ours.
