Quirky mobile interface blamed for continual dominance of desktop as transaction medium

A survey of customers making bookings on one of Nigeria’s major online hotel booking platform, Jovago.com has revealed that more transactions are made on personal computers than mobile devices. This according to Marek Zmyslowski, Managing Director, Jovago.com, may be due to the quirky nature of mobile interface and imperfect level of effectiveness of mobile gateways.

Speaking on a panel at the ongoing social media week in Lagos, Zmyslowski said one of the general reasons why there is higher activity on PCs than mobile is also the observation that many customers connect to the internet via the Wi-Fi internet connectivity at their places of work.

In terms of actions, he said people generally use mobile devices for on-the-go activities such as replying messages and quickly checking stuffs online. But when they want to see glossier pictures, they often use their mobile devices.

He added that when online payment gateways become as effective as expected, and mobile apps and interface are less quirky, more transactions could begin to be done via mobile.

The survey revealed that 56% of hotel bookings done by travellers were via computers, 37% via mobile and 7% via tablet devices. Even though computers are still the most popular, Jovago concluded that smartphones are growing.
