Nigerian telcos to clear N165bn tax debt by July 2018

The VP of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Umar Garba Danbatta has directed telecom operators in the country to clear their tax debts before the end of July 2018. He said this during a meeting with the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).

According to him, operators are owing NGN165 billion (about USD460 million).

Danbatta stressed that compliance by telecom companies with their tax obligations is one of the key points that contribute to the development of the telecoms sector. The money collected makes it possible to invest in the telecom industry and to offer the various players on the market an environment conducive to their activities.

At the meeting, the vice president of the NCC also discussed with Olusola Teniola, the director general of ATCON, the problem of multiple taxation faced by operators.

In addition to national taxes, there are regional taxes. Operators who complain about being riddled with invoices have asked the telecom sector representative to the government to talk to their Finance counterpart to harmonize them.

Thus, the actors will no longer pay the same bills several times.
