Nigerian Police officers undergo cyber security training

The Nigerian Police Force has been advised to invest more in technologies capable of tackling cybercrime. This advise was given to the force by the President of Cyber Security Association of Nigeria (CSEAN), Remi Afon, after the group trained some police officers on cyber security.

According to Afon, there are over 97 million internet subscribers in the country, he added that crimes such as forgery, extortion and kidnapping were assisted with the internet, thus the need for the training.

He said the training, held at the force headquarters, Abuja, exposed some of the officers to common strategies used by scammers to exploit residents.

He said: “Attacks can hypothetically be carried out on any individual, corporate office, government or online retailer connected to the Internet. It can persist for a long duration as proxy connections and Internet protocols are constantly changed by the attacker.”

He said some of the spamming techniques included creation of short but compelling tweets, with links to free vouchers, free merchandise and job posts, among others, which eventually lead unsuspecting users to malicious sites.

The CSEAN president stated that with appropriate knowledge, the police could easily trace, track and ensure prosecution of offenders.
