NIG Tasks Nigerian youths On Creativity In Software Development

The Nigerian Internet Group (NIG), on Thursday asked Nigerian youths to be more creative in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) activities through software development.

Mr Bayo Banjo, President, NIG, told newsmen in Lagos that the country still lagged behind in the area of ICT software development.

Banjo said that dynamism and role of ICT in the global polity made it mandatory for youths to rededicate their mindsets from being mere consumers of the products.

He said that Nigeria’s over-dependence on foreign software had slowed down youths’ pace of growth and development of local software.

The president urged the youth to channel their energy towards achieving global competitiveness in software development, as against cyber crime and other social vices associated with ICT.

The country can only get it right in software development by engaging youths in software development to compete favourably with the knowledge economies, – Banjo said.

He said that the present administration should also create the needed environment for local capacity for software development.

With 60 per cent of Nigeria’s population under 30 years of age, we believe that the dream of Vision 20:2020 is realisable only by accelerated efforts to build and unlock the innovative capabilities of our youths.

The youths have propelled Nigeria in over just four years to become the 10th largest internet user-base in the world, he said

He urged all the tiers of government to engage the youth on software competition to move the country from the software importing to software exporting country.

Banjo also said that competition could harness the potentials of the young and intelligent minds in the country into developing useful software
