Motorola brand to be phased out this year

Moto phones will stop carrying the Motorola branding before the end of 2016. Lenovo, who acquired the company from Google  in January 2014 has decided to unify both its phone businesses under the Lenovo brand name.

This means that sometime this year, all Moto phones will be renamed ‘Moto by Lenovo’ but will still carry the winged “M” logo.

While speaking about the planned phase out, Rick Osterloh, Motorola’s chief operating officer mentioned that although the brand will be dropped, it will remain as part of Lenovo’s organizational setting. A Lenovo spokesperson also added that Motorola Mobility would continue to exist as the engineering and design engine for all of Lenovo’s mobile products.

The demise of the Motorola brand to me is a reminder of just how important it is for businesses not to rest on their oars. I mean this was the company that invented the mobile phone but years down the line they’re being pushed out of the market completely. Oh how the mighty have fallen indeed.
