Telecoms operators in Nigeria are focusing on improving the service quality in 2019, according to the president of the Association of Telecommunications Enterprises of Nigeria (ATCON), Olusola Teniola, and that of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Enterprises of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo.
They both agreed this focus would profoundly transform the local telecoms market. They told Guardian about joint strategic investments for the creation of an open access fiber optic network via InfraCos. This initiative is expected to increase the number of Nigerians that have access to high speed internet.
Operators also intend to build new telecom stations to densify the network from 45,000 towers to 70,000 towers, with a predominance of 4G towers expected to grow from 7,000 to 12,000.
The leaders also revealed special attention will be given to frequency spectra. Teniola and Adebayo argued that the industry will push for further optimization to stimulate the development of bandwidth-hungry wireless applications.
According to Teniola, telecom operators in Nigeria have also committed to providing mobile money services to an additional 90 million people.
