Huawei VR: a Samsung Gear VR look alike

Soon after unveiling its latest flagship device – the P9, Huawei has announced that it would be releasing its own Virtual Reality (VR) headset soon. Huawei is the second handset maker (after Samsung) to make its own VR headset.

Aptly called the Huawei VR, Huawei’s headset looks and functions very much like Samsung’s Gear VR, as it comes complete with a viewer (into which you have to slot in a smartphone), a head strap and touchpad on the side with which to navigate VR content. It is compatible with the Huawei P9, P9 Plus and Mate 8.

Huawei however added during its announcement that its VR headset is the first mobile VR headset to support 360 degree sound field (with headphones). Considering that the Gear VR comes with a spatial audio accessed through its MilkVR app, experts are wondering if Huawei’s assertion is just a marketing skip or the announcement of some new tech feature.

Although there’s no word on how much this will go for, Huawei did say that the Huawei VR will launch with a lot of content including panoramic images, movies, panoramic tours, games and 360 video.
