How To Use The Nigeria Passport Application Portal

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the anticipated Passport application portal.

The initiative was achieved through the Ministry of Interior.

This is expected to make the process of passport application easy and seamless.

Launching the portal on Monday Jan 8, 2024, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji – Ojo said; “The new online system represents a significant win for Nigerians seeking passports. No longer will they contend with long queues, cumbersome paperwork, and opaque procedures. Instead, they can expect a faster, more transparent, and more secure path to obtaining travel documents.”

He also stated that the online passport application portal will serve both Nigerian and international  applicants.

The minister had also mentioned the cost of the different available passport sizes.

For Nigerian applicants,

  •  32-page passports with five-year validity would cost N35,000, 
  •  64-page passports with a 10-year validity would pay N70,000.

Meanwhile, for foreign applicants who wish to apply,

  •   passport with 32 pages and 5 year validity will cost $130,
  •    passports with 64 pages and 10 years validity  will cost  $230.

How To Apply 

To apply online, follow these steps:

1. Visit the online application portal https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/

2. Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport” (for new applicants) or “apply for renewal/re-issue”  for passport renewal

3. Enter your NIN to auto fill data from NIMC  4. Fill in  other required information 

4. Upload your passport photograph and other supporting documents as required

5. Visit the closest Immigration Office for your biometric capture. (You can check availability of centers on the portal and schedule an appointment)

Passports are promised to be ready for collection within  two weeks.

Application Criteria 

For fresh applications ;

1. Applicant must be a Nigerian

2. They must have a NIN

3. They must have a passport photograph that meets ICAO standards

For passport  renewal:

Applicant must have;

1.  NIN

2.  an old passport number

3.  a passport photograph that meets ICAO standards.

4.  documents such as birth certificate, local government certificate of origin, and other supporting documents ready.

The development of this portal comes only weeks after the minister promised Nigerians would be able to digitally renew or apply for passports.
