Tech giant Google is launching its free public WiFi initiative called Google Station today in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja making it the second city in Nigeria after Lagos where the service is available.
Google describes Station as a program to provide high quality, high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots. Abuja has already been added to the Google Station global map.
An announcement is expected to be made at a major event that would feature Google reps in Nigeria.
TechCity gathered that while Google Station is available at multiple sites in Abuja including airport and shopping mall, the service is being rolled out in Abuja at Wuse Market and it is in partnership with broadband service provider Backbone Connectivity Network.
The Abuja launch will extend Google Station cities in Africa to 2, both in Nigeria. Across the world, Google Station is available in a total of 5 countries – Indonesia, India, Mexico, Thailand and Nigeria.
Speaking in Lagos at the official launch of Google Station in Nigeria, Google Nigeria Country Director, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, said Google Station will be rolling out in 200 locations in five cities across Nigeria by the end of 2019, bringing Wi-Fi to millions of people.
“Sites include markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, universities, and more,” she said.
