Google’s video applications Meet and Duo are about to be integrated into one product, the company has revealed. Both apps have similar functions, but Meet boasts of more conferencing features. Over the past years, Meet functions have ben integrated into Gmail and other Google Workspace applications. These integrations made Meet more professional and a bit quicker to access compared to Duo; hence the merger.
Google hopes that this merger will help solve problems of modern communication and will prioritize what users actually want and use often. Of the two Google products Duo and Meet, the latter is the choice video platform for most people. Focusing on this and improving its services will help users manage their online identity.
This plan by Google is similar to what the Chat and Hangout applications went through a few years back. A case of similar products existing under one company. One just had to go, and a merger was the best way out. This helped users to streamline their communication options so as not to burn out while handling multiple Google applications with similar functions.
For most people, including yours truly, the pandemic helped boost our use of Google Meet for work and school. There was hardly a situation that required one to use Google Duo. Yet, the app lives rent-free across our Android devices. Thus, merging Duo with the Meet app will help reduce the clutter of unused apps on our devices.
We also gather that, with time, Google Meet will no longer be on the PlayStore. This is Google’s bid to further unify its core workspace applications, and like the GenZ say, I am here for it.
