Noise cancelling headphones are one of the few gadgets that change how a day feels. The bus gets quieter, the open office stops leaking into your calls, and a long flight stops wearing you out. The hard part is that the best pairs now cost $400 to $550, and the differences between them are smaller than the prices suggest. So we sorted the current models by budget and by what each one is actually best at.

Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM6

Best for: most people who want strong noise cancelling for commutes, offices and flights, on any phone.
Why we picked it: Sony’s flagship has the most complete feature list here. Sony rates it at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, it weighs about 254 grams, and it can stay connected to two devices at once, so a call on your phone can interrupt music from your laptop. The regular price at Best Buy is $458, and it was on sale for $378 when we checked, which is the lowest price of the premium picks.
The downside: a full charge takes about 3.5 hours, according to Sony, so plug it in the night before a trip rather than the morning of.
Skip if: you only need noise cancelling for a daily bus ride. The WH-CH730N further down does that job for less than half the price.

Best for comfort and calls: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

Best for: people who wear headphones for most of the workday and spend a lot of it on calls.
Why we picked it: Bose built its reputation on comfort, and this second generation keeps the plush cushions and a headband designed to spread the pressure. It costs $449, runs up to 30 hours, and a 15-minute charge gives about 3 hours of listening, according to Bose. It also plays lossless audio over its USB-C cable, which helps if you listen at a desk.
The downside: battery life drops to about 23 hours with Bose Immersive Audio switched on, Bose doesn’t include a power adapter, and the headphones aren’t waterproof.
Skip if: you want the longest battery life for the money. The Sennheiser below runs almost twice as long.

Best for iPhone and Mac owners: Apple AirPods Max 2

Best for: people already using an iPhone, iPad or Mac who want headphones that switch between them without fuss.
Why we picked it: Apple’s March 2026 update moved AirPods Max to the H2 chip. Apple says noise cancelling is up to 1.5 times more effective than the first model, and the headphones now support Adaptive Audio, which mixes noise cancelling and transparency on its own, plus lossless audio over USB-C. Features like Conversation Awareness and Live Translation are built in, but they work best inside Apple’s world.
The downside: at $549 ($499 on sale at Best Buy when we checked) these are the most expensive pick, Best Buy’s listing puts battery life at about 20 hours, the shortest here, and they aren’t water resistant.
Skip if: you use an Android phone. Most of what makes AirPods Max 2 worth the money depends on Apple devices.

Best battery life: Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless

Best for: frequent travelers and anyone who forgets to charge things.
Why we picked it: Sennheiser rates the Momentum 5 at up to 57 hours with noise cancelling on, nearly twice the Sony and Bose. Its 700 mAh battery is user-replaceable, so when it wears out in a few years you can swap it yourself instead of replacing the headphones. It charges over USB-C and costs $399.99 at Best Buy.
The downside: at about 290 grams it is the heaviest pair here, and Sennheiser’s US page doesn’t say whether it can stay connected to two devices at once.
Skip if: you switch between a laptop and a phone all day and need both connected at the same time. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is confirmed to do that.

Best under $200: Sony WH-CH730N

Best for: students, commuters and anyone who wants real noise cancelling without spending $400.
Why we picked it: This is the cheapest way into Sony’s noise cancelling. It lists for $179.99 at Best Buy and was on sale for $129.99 when we checked, Sony rates it at up to 50 hours with noise cancelling on, it weighs about 207 grams, and it supports connecting to two devices at once. That is more battery than either of the premium Sony or Bose pairs.
The downside: it sits below the WH-1000XM6 in Sony’s range, so expect less blocking of voices and higher-pitched noise. Sony doesn’t publish a noise cancelling figure that lets you compare the two directly.
Skip if: you fly often and want the quietest cabin possible. That is where the extra money for the WH-1000XM6 or Bose goes.

Best earbuds for iPhone: Apple AirPods Pro 3

Best for: iPhone owners who want noise cancelling in a pocket and a workout companion in one.
Why we picked it: Apple says AirPods Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as the previous AirPods Pro. They run up to 8 hours with noise cancelling on, carry an IP57 rating for sweat and water, and add a heart rate sensor for workouts. Best Buy had them at $249.99 when we checked on Nov. 2, with no sale running.
The downside: the heart rate feature only works with an iPhone or Apple Watch, and most of the extras assume you use Apple devices.
Skip if: you use Android. You lose most of the extras, so the Sony earbuds below are the better buy.

Best earbuds for Android: Sony WF-1000XM6

Best for: Android users, and anyone who wants top earbud noise cancelling that isn’t tied to one phone brand.
Why we picked it: Sony rates the WF-1000XM6 at up to 8 hours with noise cancelling on. The case charges wirelessly, and the earbuds connect to two devices at once. Best Buy listed them at $328 and had them on sale for $298 when we checked.
The downside: they are rated IPX4, which covers splashes and sweat, while AirPods Pro 3 carry the tougher IP57 rating.
Skip if: you swim, run in heavy rain or want the cheapest good earbuds. These are a premium pair.

What each hour of battery costs
The upshot: if you divide the price by the battery hours with noise cancelling on, the cheaper pairs come out far ahead. These figures use the list prices in the table above, not sale prices.
- Sony WH-CH730N: about $3.60 per hour of battery ($179.99 for 50 hours)
- Sennheiser Momentum 5: about $7.02 per hour ($399.99 for 57 hours)
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen): about $14.97 per hour ($449 for 30 hours)
- Sony WH-1000XM6: about $15.27 per hour ($458 for 30 hours)
- Apple AirPods Max 2: about $27.45 per hour ($549 for 20 hours)
Battery is not the whole story. The premium pairs buy you stronger noise cancelling, better microphones and more polished apps. But if you mostly want quiet on a daily commute, the cheaper pairs give you more listening for every dollar.
Over-ear headphones or earbuds?
Over-ear headphones cover your whole ear, so they block more sound before the noise cancelling even starts, and their bigger batteries last longer. Earbuds fit in a pocket and suit the gym, but how well they block noise depends on how well the tips seal in your ears. Try every tip size in the box. A poor seal makes even the best earbuds sound thin and let noise in.
How to choose the right pair
- Start with your phone. AirPods work best with Apple devices. Sony, Bose and Sennheiser work the same way on iPhone and Android.
- Check two-device connection. If you move between a laptop and a phone all day, look for multipoint, which keeps both connected. Sony confirms it on the WH-1000XM6, WH-CH730N and WF-1000XM6.
- Think about where you’ll wear them. For flights, over-ear pairs with long battery life make the most difference. For workouts, pick earbuds with a water rating.
- Watch the sale calendar. Headphones are among the most discounted gadgets, and several picks here were already $30 to $80 off when we checked on Nov. 2.
- Black Friday is Nov. 27. Best Buy already tags several of these prices as a “Holiday Deal”, so Black Friday may bring them lower or may simply match today’s price. If the pick you want is already on sale, waiting three weeks could save you little. If it is still at full price, it is worth checking again that week. We will recheck these prices before Black Friday.

Common questions about noise cancelling headphones
Do noise cancelling headphones protect your hearing?
They can help, because blocking background noise means you don’t need to turn the volume up as high. The protection comes from listening quieter, not from the headphones themselves.
Can you hear announcements on a plane?
Yes. Every pick here has a transparency or aware mode that lets outside sound in, and you can switch it on with a button or a tap without taking the headphones off.
Is noise cancelling worth it for a cheap pair?
For steady low sounds like engines, air conditioning and traffic, yes. Cheaper pairs are weaker against voices and sudden sounds, which is where the premium models earn their price.
How we picked
We compared current noise cancelling headphones and earbuds sold in the US, using each maker’s specs and support pages and Best Buy’s listings, checked on Oct. 12, 2026 and rechecked on Nov. 2, 2026. We ranked them on how well they suit a specific kind of buyer, battery life with noise cancelling on, two-device connection, and price. We haven’t run hands-on tests for this guide, and we’ll update the picks and prices as new models arrive.
